FRAGRANT PLANTS

Many FRAGRANT PLANTS need greenhouses to successfully bloom, even though we've included fragrant Hoyas, Pereskia, Sansevieria, Solandra, Eucharis, Myrtus, and others in other sections of this catalogue. For some very very scented (but definitely not frangrant) blossoms check Amorphophallus, Typhonium, Stapelia, and Huernia. For scented foliage we suggest Centrathermum, Salvia, Curcuma, Elletaria, Laurus, Lippa, MeNtha, Myrtus, Pelargonium, Piper, Plectranthus, Pogostemon, Aeolanthus, and so on.

99167 FRAGRANT PLANT COLLECTION: If you have a hobby greenhouse, a very bright plantroom or vast windowsill location, or if you garden under artifical lights (Click here for a quick trip to our selection of some very handsome LIGHTSTAND FURNITURE), you will be most successful with such groups as Cestrum, Gardenia, Jasminum, Murraya, Nicotiana, Passiflora, Solanum, Stephanotis, Trachelospermum, Pelargonium (with scented leaves), Anredera, Carissa, Cestrum, Citrofortunella, Crinum, Pittosporum, Viola, Datura, Brugsmansia, Epiphyllum, Eucharis, Hedychium, Ligustrum, Lonicera, Myrtus, Osmanthus, Neomarica, Rosa, Sansevieria, Vanilla, Tulbaghia, Dombeya, Pereskia and so forth. Some plants are better known for being "scented," rather than fragrant: Amorphophallus, Sauromatum, Stapelia, and Huernia start this list! We will include several plants best known for scented foliage from Centrathermum, Crithmum, Curcuma, Mentha, Myrtus, Pelargonium, Piper, Plectranthus, Pogostemon patchouli, Thorncroftia, Aeolanthus, Olea, and so forth. 5 plants, our choice @ PRICE: $ 35.00.

Remember that all must have full light and adequate fertilizer in order to produce flower buds. Collections are entirely our choice, changing constantly; particular plants must be ordered by stock number-a representative selection if offered:

11626 ADIANTUM RADDIANUM FRAGRANTISSIMUM POLYPO CGH TERR HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Elegant arching blackish stems accent the dark narrow fans of this heirloom "Fragrant Maidenhair Fern"--Not quite the challenge as a houseplant that some of its fussier cousins are--and quite wonderful in any terrarium composition.

53001 ALPINIA KATSUMADAI ZIN TGH CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Rhizomatous "Katsumada's Galangal" with closely bunched stems sheathed with slim fragrant leaves; waxy white blossom richly fragrant; followed by seeds (called Tsao Tou Kou) used to treat spleen and stomach problems, control vomiting

41548 ANREDERA [BOUSSINGAULTIA] CORDIFOLIA BAS HP TGH PRICE: $ 2.00 "Madeira Vine" or "Mignonette Vine" From tuberous roots rise rapidly growing stems with succulent leaves and racemes of heavily fragrant white flowers. Argentina native, thus the tubers are persistent in subtropical zones if below any frost line; in the north, either dig or bring in the container for winter. Nonetheless, always a favorite as a vigorous intensely fragrant windowgarden plant.

56088 BEGONIA ODORATA ALBA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Sprays of small white fragrant flowers; glossy ovate leaves spaced on a big boned gal of a specimen plant. Needs elbow room to flourish, but the subtle sweet scents are ample payment from this Caribbean shrub.

56894 BEGONIA PEPPERMINT PRINCESS [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 (c) Stout stems bend from clusters of simidouble pink flower clusters perfect with the glossy green angel wing leaves blushed chocolate red beneath.

42196 BRUGMANSIA CANDIDA DOUBLE WHITE [PLENA] SOL CGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 Handsome double flowered "Angel's Trumpet" leaves the viewer rather breathless. Dark pelted foliage distinct. Customers report this to easily produce heavily scented blossoms more reliably than others in a greenhouse setting; branches easily; seems to respond well to the restriction of containers. This hard working hybrid of B. aurea x B. versicolor is usually offered as 'Knightii' in Europe. The only one we grow here that has been observed to bloom every month of the year.

42268 BRUGMANSIA CHARLES GRIMALDI SOL CGH TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Impressive arrays of luminous salmon-yellow trumpets dangle from the stout stems. Impressive conservatory subject. Leaves are cut Poinsettia style; trumpets typically darken to a deeper peachy orange than B. v. 'Apricot' (suaveolens x versicolor), although the distinction is minor. Visitors have told us that this seems to be the hybrid known as 'Grand Marnier' in England.

54008 BRUGMANSIA INSIGNIS DR. SUESS [HYB] SOL CGH PRICE: $ 5.25 "Fancy Angel's trumpet" with elongated fls of yellow orange; both wider throated trumpets with stronger yellow tone than 'Charles Grimaldi' --Possibly B. suaveolens with bell shaped flowers (as opposed to the more typical trumpet shape of most hybrids); whatever its parentage, it remains the most vigorous grower in northern climates..

42010 BRUGMANSIA INSIGNIS FROSTY PINK SOL CGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 Impressive "Angel's Trumpet" from the Andes often listed also as B suaveolens cultivar. From curious substantial shrubs out-angle heavy pink trumpet flowers. Quite astounding when in winter flower--although the color easily washes out in warm conditions. Can be a challenge to bloom in the deep south, or so we are told.

59201 BRUGMANSIA INSIGNIS SINGLE WHITE SOL TGH CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 "White Angel's Trumpet" Large white dangling flowers with heady nocturnal fragrance are produced with great abandon from vigorous elegantly branched stems--considered the most elegant of the tribe and most likely to get its photo in a book. Possibly versicolor arborea.

42195 BRUGMANSIA [SAUVEOLENS] JAMAICA YELLOW SOL CGH PRICE: $ 9.00 Rich trumpets dangle straight down like a versicolor type. Large trumpets of heavy glossy substance colored a creamy lime-yellow. Very regular re-flowering cycles of impressive numbers.

31489 BRUGMANSIA PEACHES AND CREAM SOL CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Richly perfumed creamy pink pendant trumpet fls dangle down from the canopy of ivory white margined foliage. Leaves can become large if planted in open ground.

55580 BRUGMANSIA SUAVEOLENS VARIEGATA SOL TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Compact statured "Variegated Angel's Trumpet with foot long somewhat upturned clotted creamy white belled trumpets repeating the stunning white margins of the downy somewhat pleated leaves. Easiest to flower of the variegated clones we offer.

50503 CALLISIA FRAGRANS COMM HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.50 Formerly Spironema or Tradescantia dracaenoides. Upright cupped whorls of purple-edged leaves give character of "False Bromeliad"; multiple cascading runners effective in hanging basket use. Vigorous Mexican native. Considered medicinal.

40101 CARISSA GRANDIFLORA HORIZONTALIS APO HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 Compact; prostrate rigid stems; reduced spines; pinwheel flowers produce edible fruit; used in Japanese cascade bonsai as 'Naikoku-ume'; still uncommon in USA. Stems held in rigid horizontal planes, not weeping like 'Green Cascade.'

40107 CENTRATHERUM INTERMEDIUM COMP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Brazilian Button Flower" Serrate leaves scented of pineapple; bluish-lavender flowers resembling tiny Canadian Thistle blossoms, thus also called the "Martinique Batchelor's Button." Easy culture with bright light, thus excellent for use in outdoor bedding. Newly popular in urns and windowboxes; a traditional favorite in hobby greenhouses and humid plant rooms. Too much fun not to add to your mixed containers.

56568 CESTRUM AURANTIACUM SOL TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 The upright "Guatemalan Jasmine" presents very ornamental somewhat upright pyramidal clusters of bronzy orange tubular blossoms, distinctly but not agressively fragrant, once achieving maturity. We find that this lance leaved species usually needs to reach some size before reliably blooming. Needs sun and humidity to perform well, thus sometimes a challenge as a houseplant.

40110 CESTRUM DIURNUM [ALBUM] SOL HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Day Jessamine" or "Willow-lvd Jasmine" West indies shrub with clusters of greenish-white flowers, with petals bent backward, spearmint-fragrant by day; followed by even more dramatic and strikingly beautiful eggplant purple berries in abundant sprays so dense as to tip the branchlets. Demands bright light & even moisture for best results (not an ideal houseplant)--a traditional favorite in northern hobby greenhouses as produces much interest in mid-winter flower & late spring fruit with very low maintenance.

40112 CESTRUM NOCTURNUM SOL HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Night Blooming Jessamine/Jasmine" Slender nightshade shrub with open sprays of greenish white creamy tubular blossoms intensely fragrant at night, followed by white berries.

66862 CITROFORTUNELLA MITIS RUT CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Excellent miniature "Calamondin Orange" popular as a decorative Christmas gift; without doubt, the easist citris to set fruit in your hobby greenhouse--especially popular because the extremely colorful fruit is at its showiest during the Christmas season when you most need it. Many plant growers have good luck with this in the house on a pebble tray in a sunny spot. Cannot ship to Florida, Texas, Arizona & Western states.

41360 CLERODENDRON FRAGRANS PLENIFLORUM VER CGH HH PRICE: $ 15.00 More correctly Clerodendron philippinum--the deservedly famous "Chinese Glory-Bower." Woody erect stems with dramatic pairs of heavy wide leaves terminate in lovely bouquets of double white hydrangea-like white fls fading to shell pink. In North best grown as conservatory subject; winter dormant if kept cool; ours in the warm conservatory grow & bloom all winter--and the foliage is dramatically soft, the impressive clusters of flowers . . . simply breathtakingly beautiful, earning itself a place in any larger hobby greenhouse and in every conservatory.

41245 CLERODENDRON TRICHOTOMUM MARGINATUM VER CGH HH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Japanese Glorybower" Wide spread shrub with decorative leaves widely margined in yellow-ochre; sprays of starry white fragrant fls in reddish calyces; followed by blue berries. This is an imperative for all collectors of variegates, even though it demands considerable and constant warmth to flourish. Not zone 5 hardy as is regular form; nonetheless a dependablely good container plant. In subtropical gardens, root hardy--and remarkably, in our test gardens outside, it seems usually root hardy even in Zone 6 with adequate winter protection..

40133 CLERODENDRON UGANDENSE VER CGH HP PRICE: $ 8.00 "Blue Butterfly Flower" Upside-down blossoms of bright blue with indigo stamens (filaments purple, anthers blue!) suspended like chains of butterfies from the slim straight stems used as arrow shafts; beware the strongly scented (and we mean seriously scented) foliage. Perhaps more odd than beautiful.

51027 CRINUM ASIATICUM VARIEGATUM AMARY TGH HP PRICE: $35.00 PRICE: $19.50 NOTE! For a limited time, we are offering this wonderful plant at a reduced price. We had a good crop this year, so we are passing this on to you. "Striped Bengal Lily" Large fleshy sword-like leaves are most liberally streaked white & cream; fragrant clusters of waxy white blossoms with purpled centers--these clusters, held alof on strong two edged stalks, can produce up to twenty individual flowers on a mature plant. Striking decorator specimen for the warm greenhouse--drops roots if soil is cool. Certainly the easiest and most dramatic for the hobby greenhouse; equally wonderful if brought out into your outdoor display pool for the summer (but does best if not submerged--the water line must be below the point where the giant trunk emerges from the root mass). Unlike most variegated Crinum cultivars, if given adequate warmth, this one NEVER drops foliage in a cycle of dormancy or in a fit of stubbornness, but incrementally adds more and more fantastically white striped succulent leaves to create a magnificent specimen.

51032 CRINUM ST. CHRISTOPHER [HYB] AMARY CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Tulip Crinum" Fragrant snow-white tulip-cupped flower clusters over compact vases of fleshy leaves; we have received reports that customers have bloomed this in a sunny window with regular fertilizer and feet in a shallow bowl of water (no, the customers did not necessarilly keep their feet in shallow water).

42265 DATURA METEL CORNUCOPAEA SOL CGH SSA PRICE: $ 4.00 Large purple speckled cream trumpets held semi-erect thereby revealing the three-tiered fragrant layers: "Double Purple Horn of Plenty" famous as source of Scopolamine. Sometimes listed as D. arborea 'Double Black.' We have this only on a most irregular basis--check with us to see if seedlings are available. Always creates a sensation here when it starts blooming late summer.

54561 DOMBEYA WALLICHII BYT CGH HP PRICE: $ 8.50 Stout stalks with impressive foliage present the remarkably showy balls of crowded rich pink flowers emitting a rich honey fragrance. Needs light and room. Always good to observe that an old favorite is so totally back in style--especially with our many Florida and Texas collector customers.

40232 DRACAENA THALIOIDES AGAV HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Stiff fans of crepe mimic leaves; this Pleomele thalioides famous for surviving very low light conditions. The terminal spikes of highly scented flowers may be fragrant to some, but reminescent of airplane glue to others. Not a stunning showpiece, but a survivor with attractive leathery foliage.

53021 ELETTARIA [AMOMUM] CARDAMOMUM DWARF ZIN HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 "Dwarf Cardamom Ginger" Small version of this spice--attractive, easily grown houseplant with wonderfully fragrant foliage quickly clumping in a windowsill pot. A tonic and expectorant, also ingested to aid digestion; belived by some to detoxify caffeine. We most emphatically do not stand by any of these claims!

66023 EPIPHYLLUM OXYPETALUM CAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.00 "Night Blooming Cereus" or "Orchid Cactus" Large fragrant white flowers, rose outside, on flat waxy crenate "leaves" (actually the terminal sections of the stems) flaring out at the ends of the lower supporting stiff rounded stems. This is the one Grandma drug out to the open front porch so that every possible neighbor could be collared and brought over to the porch for those several summer nights the giant scented blossoms opened in all their unreal splendor. Maybe I've lived in a small town too long?

51287 EUCHARIS CHRISTINE AMARYL HP PRICE: $ 10.00 The excellent extremely fragrant "Compact Amazon Lily" with slimmer tighter foliage than the species grandiflora, yet relatively large waxy white daffodil shaped flowers are produced in considerable numbers once the offsetting bulbs reach a mature size thanks to your providing a warm richly fertilized mix with bight light; good for conditions too warm for its Amaryllis/Hippeastrum cousins--thus a perfect sunny window houseplant easily bloomed.

51040 EUCHARIS GRANDIFLORA [AMAZONICA] AMARY HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Amazon Lily" Highly scented white waxy blossoms shaped like nodding daffodils held above glossy deep green leaves; ideal houseplant for a room too warm for its amaryllis cousins to thrive.

40319 GARDENIA CORNUTA RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00"Natal Gardenia" glossy narrow crimped leaves; fragrant spicy "Pinwheel" blossoms irregularly produced. Same odd angular boxy habit of G. thumbergii, but a different flower scent and odd orange fruit. Used for bonsai in Asia.

40320 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES [AUGUSTA] MYSTERY RUB CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.25 Double white large fragrant fls; florist's favorite, thus the "Corsage Grandiflora" growing to be a stout shrub with rich glossy green quilted foliage. Asian herb for perfume oils; for also treating colds & coughs! If located in a low humidity situation the flower buds will drop before opening; in fact, any major change in location while in bud can result in the blossoms aborting so find a cool very bright spot and LEAVE it there.

40321 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES RADICANS FLOREPLENO RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Dwarf Gardenia" Low shrub with tidy glossy dark green leaves paired on much-branched stems to beautifully frame lovely fragrant double white blooms; unlike florist types, this produces a few fls at a time, but throughout the year. Easy as a windowsill potplant; excellent as a low statured bonsai subject developing excellent bark and maintaining petite blackish green foliage, both important characteristics for such an undertaking.

42004 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES RADICANS MARGINED RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Marvelous "Margined Mini Gardenia" Low petite shrub, which prefers a cool winter location, aflutter with small narrow waxy leaves, each boldly bordered waxy ivory white; lovely hauntingly fragrant white rose shaped blossoms. If grown indoors, we suggest you place on a pebble tray to maintain constant humidity levels. A seriously beautiful plant.

58357 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES (AUGUSTA) VARIEGATED RUB CGH PRICE: $ 22.00 Very striking"Margined Gardenia" with broad glossy leaves margined a rich ivory yellow fading to white on woody upright stem presenting quite fragrant single white blossom. This is much prized by collectors--bright light and good humidity.

58403 GARDENIA JASMINIOIDES [VEITCHII] YASHIOKA RUB TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Nomenclaturally challenged "Aimee Gardenia" with dark green crinkly leaves with broad parchment toned central variegarion sometimes further enhanced with a central flame of emerald green. Lovely white flowers; vigorous wide shrub.

41817 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES (AUGUSTA) KLEIM'S HARDY RUB CGH HH PRICE: $ 8.00 Cultivar of "Cape Jasmine" selected for tolerance of cooler winters than the species. Quite prolific blooming with many fragrant single flowers reaching a peak in early summer.

20494 GLOXINIA ARION [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 Stout rosy magenta stems with G. perennis type foliage topped by wide slipper flowers flaring into a bell of rich magenta with spotted throat, somewhat fragrant. Batcheller hybrid. Dormancy cycles seem somewhat random over the years--constant warmth can nearly eliminate the cycle but may reduce the vigor of the plant.

41153 HEDERA COLCHICA SULPHUR HEART ARAL HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 6.75 A cultivar of this thickly-substanced "Persian Ivy," native from the Caucasus to Iran, with beautiful yellow ochre leaf centers turning saffron during cool winters as the green borders become a chocolate purple tone; spicy aromatic foliage. Known in England as 'Paddy's Pride'. Hardy outdoors here if given a very sheltered location--but even in Z6b here leaves burn simply because of their sheer surface size.

53023 HEDYCHIUM CORONARIUM ZIN TGH HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Butterfly Ginger" Fragrant white flowers top very tall stalks. The heavily perfumed ivory petals are used in Hawaiian leis, hence, also known as the "Garland Flower." Evergreen species easy to grow with good light.

60094 HOYA LACUNOSA ASC HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.75 Tassel-like pendant umbels of fuzzy lemon-greenish white flowers with lemon centers and soft fragrance (a very clean aroma) perfectly match the dwarf-statured quilted leaves; the name derives form the lacunose leaf surface. That is, the surface of the leaf is cupped or depressed between the veins. Malaysian native beautifully displayed in small baskets to present the dangling scented flower clusters easily or trained on a moss topiary. Certainly the least challenging small statured cascading species to easily bloom as a houseplant.

61016 HOYA PAZIAE ASC HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.00 Shruby vine habit; out arching wiry stems with small waxy paired leaves and delightfully fragrant white and lavender flowers in cute umbels. An unusually undemanding easy species preferring broken light and evenly moist well drained soil (likes a sweet, not acid soil) to form a lovely (relatively compact) houseplant. May be sent as a mossed URC

62643HYLOCERUS GUATAMALENSIS CAC TGH PRICE: $ 7.75 Famous edible Guatamalan "Dragon Fruit" follows the most remarkable nocturnal intensely fragrant foot long white blossoms which emerge from the most impressively statured three winged glaucous clambering stems of this semi-epiphytic big-boned Cactus. Typically sent in dry moss--although potted ones are often mailed as well. Be warned that this is a very very big boned vine.

41102 IBOSA [TETRADENIA] RIPARIA LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 "Musk Plant" or "Misty Plume Plant" Attractive woody-stemmed shrublet with attractive small musk-scented leaves and creamy-white winter blossom panicles creating a beautiful whispy mist around Christmas time--thus its great popularity with Victorian gardeners and continued fascination for today's hobby greenhousers. Called "Nutmeg Bush" in England; used as a moth repellent in its native Africa. This is the real thing--not the "Iboza" of the trade which is usually the trailing basket plant is more accurately identified as Plectranthus madagascarensis, a cascading mint.

Jasmines (JASMINUM) for the 2012 SEASON

The JASMINES: Why not try a JASMINE COLLECTION. We offer two types of Jasmine Collection. For overall blooming reliability, the second Collection is much more adaptable.

99104 JASMINE: TRUE SPECIES COLLECTION: We send a selection of 5 actual Jasminum species for PRICE: $22.00; these will demand very bright, evenly cool fall and winter conditions, and reliable humidity levels in order to set flower buds. If you are unable to provide these very strict fall conditions, best try the following collection instead in order to achieve the fragrant blossoms.

99105 JASMINE: PLANTS CALLED JASMINE: Should you lack the cool, humid, very bright conditions demanded by the bulk of the true species but still want the intense fragrances, we can select a group collectively known (because of their type of fragrance) by the common name "Jasmine" such as specific species of Cestrum, Solanum, Pandorea, Stephanotis, certain Mandevilla, specific Gardenia, & Trachleospermum, as well as those true ones (such as the Sambac crew) reliably performing well indoors. 5 plants @ PRICE: $18.00

Forms a laterally arching mound studded with many tiny "Lantana" heads with fringes of white Lantana blossoms. We are told by fanciers of tropical herbs that the roots have a distinctive liquorice flavor; we have yet to chew any roots to test this information, prefering instead to use this as a subtle but attractive cascading addition to windowboxes and summer urns--as nights become more chill the foliage turns a bronzy purple.

Marvelous fragrant vine willing to hide any eyesore in your landscape--such as your neighbor's garage. We have included a photo looking up into the canopy of this rapidly growing handsome giant in our greenhouses. Simply too wonderful not to have.

72792 PITTOSPORUM HETEROPHYLLUM MARGINATUM PIT HH PRICE: $ 15.00 A Chinese shrub with white margined foliage; with maturity this Z9 beauty produces small fragrant yellow flowers. Very petite in appearance, but quite sturdy--growing remarkably fast for a plant so heavily variegated.

Certainly the most attractive hanging basket plant we know of which is also handy to treat the results of any random misadventures you may have with your pet scorpion!

58423 PLECTRANTHUS (COLEUS) CANINUS FUZZY WUZZY LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 7.50 This is a ivory white margined / variegated form of the the infamous repellant. 41132 POGOSTEMON PATCHOULI [HORT] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 Attractive coleus-statured species of uncertain nomenclature famous as the source of musky "Patchouli" intensely fragrant mint-sandlewood perfume--the predominent scent of every good rock concert (or do I date myself?). The source of Asian herb preparations for digestion, for snake bite; depression; even to prevent the spread of infection. Will defoliate if chilled during the winter, and although it will bounce back from a chill, the undistinguished spikes of winter blossoms may not form .

66905 POLIANTHES TUBEROSA THE PEARL AGAV CGH PRICE: $ 6.75 The fabuously scented "Double Flowered Tuberose" for intense fragrance in your winter greenhouse. Or: turn the dormancy cycle around and bloom this in your summer bed with the intensely fragrant "Omixachitl" blossoms creating a possible event for a summer party once you translate the Aztec codex as to which ritual need be performed!

41770 PONCIRUS TRIFOLIATA FLYING DRAGON RUT HH HT PRICE: $ 15.00 Swooping, looping branchlets of this contorted sport of "Trifoliate Orange" make this a conversation container subject--looking like a potted living barbed wire coil (barbs included); now also used as a dwarfing understock for citrus. "Karatachi" is hardy outdoors in our zone 6 climate if situated away from winter wind.

70405 ROSA RED CASCADE [HYB] ROS HT PRICE: $ 5.75Widely arching canes with deep green foliage produce a constant succession of sprays of small rich red double blossoms even in the winter greenhouse--although quite winter hardy in our Z6b. Interesting in large hanging baskets or cascading from large urns; but unrivaled as a constantly reblooming ground cover in full sun. These are well established plants. We have trialed dozens of trailing roses--this is the one with good dark glossy foliage and constant flushes of blossoms, even during hot summers.

71523 ROSA VERSCHERN [HYB] ROS HH CGH PRICE: $ 38.00 The famous "Variegated Rose" of Danish horticulture with richly splashed foliage perfect with the lovely double pink "Hybrid Tea Rose" blossoms topping the short upright canes. Yinger kindly shared this potentially difficult (because a cold greenhouse subject in far northern winters) creature with us; these are small rooted established cuttings--and since taken from mature wood, are inclined to bloom very early on under your careful supervision. Much in demand with the hobby greenhouse crowd so current availability can be less than immediate, although we have kept up admirably the last two seasons--as we have found this glorious prima donna to be impossibly difficult to ship during the heat of summer, we thus will hold your summer order until early fall. We have one specimen at the nursery here which as now survived seven winters outdoors without any severe damage.

68102 SANSEVIERIA DOONERI [HORT] AGA HP TGH PRICE: $8.50 "Fountain Plant" Arched rosettes similar to S. parva, but with wider pale tannish leaves slightly glaucous, becoming prostrate for they are far more flexible--thus making it a perfect basket subject. Delicately scented bloom spikes. Underground stolons soon fill pot with glaucous soft straps.

68108 SANSEVIERIA GRACILIS GA HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Upright stems thickly covered with pale green terete leaves, which are keeled and horned half way, with pale bands and smooth surfaces becoming grooved with age; offsetting highly decorative art noveau stolons end in tufted "hedgehog" clumps of foliage which can produce bottlebrushes of pale fragrant flowers while suspended in midair. This is the clone sold by M. Singer for many years.

68121 SANSEVIERIA HYACINTHOIDES AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Seed collected in the Transvaal by Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens Yet some writers still consider this correct for hort. guineensis (a Ceylon species!)--but this is quite distinct with handsome thick, curved abbreviated strap leaves, strongly banded, and margined with maroon brown wavy edges with a distinct papery rim. Excellent houseplant--the name refers to the scent of the blossoms (we feel serious delusional imagination is involved with this botanical decision).

68125 SANSEVIERIA KIRKII PULCHRA AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Known horticulturally as S. metallica; or as the "Star Sansevieria." Wide flattened rosette of thick wide stiftly undulant leaves richly mottled pale green on black-emerald; astonishing cone-shaped inflorescence of greenish-white scented blossoms (we say "scented"; we do not say "fragrant" as do some books and catalogues). Zanzibar native. (Actually they may indeed smell of greenish-white.)

68139 SANSEVIERIA PARVA AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 "Kenya Hyacinth" Thick deep green banded leaves in small dense rosettes which send out long pendant runners (stolons) ending in tiny plantlets; thus, excellent choice for growing in baskets. Fragrant palest pink bottlebrush blooms. Also known as S. d'amabilise. Deservedly popular as small statured, requires less than ideal conditions, tolerates shade and survives neglect.

68157 SANSEVIERIA SPICATA (HORT:CONCINNA?) AGA HP TGH PRICE: $8.50 "Tea Spoon Hemp" Manda's compact houseplant with unique spatulate short leaves of deep green ending in "spoon handle" bottoms; pale fragrant tubular flowers. Certainly one of the most attractive and appealing of the small statured "Hemps" even if its botanic identity remains in limbo .

40922 SOLANDRA MAXIMA [NITIDA] SOL TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 "Golden Chalice Vine" Enormous nine inch long yellow cupped trumpet flowers with five purple lines; on stout stems--a Mexican native essential for conservatory or porch garden. Various plant friends lug a tub of this substantial shrub (vining only when so encouraged) into their winter plantrooms for an amazing stunning early winter floral display. Horticulturally the opposite of "subtle."

54109 SOLANUM JASMINOIDES ALBUM VARIEGATUM SOL CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.50 Handsome "Variegated Nightshade Jasmine" with each fingered lf of butter yellow accented with a central green & ochre flame; clusters of yellow beaked white flowers. A vining shrub lovely trained on a small wreath or allowed to trail down from a container.

38164 SPATHIPHYLLUM VISCOUNT [HYB] ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.00 Very narrow glossy leaves under one foot; small white spathes abundantly produced above like "White Sails" scented rather like mint candy (NOT so in my experience--but then I usually miss most fragrances).

40928 STEPHANOTIS FLORIBUNDA ASC CGH HP PRICE: $ 10.00 "Madagascar Jasmine" Beautiful clusters of waxy ivory, very fragrant tubular flowers on wiry stems; dark leathery leaves. How can you improve on this!

41138 THORNCROFTIA SUCCULENTA LAB HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.75 "Mint Oak" Tidy woody stems hold pelted oak-shaped leaves with delicate mint fragrance; purple flowers. Eventually develops a gnarled woody base beloved by bonsai fanciers.

40945 TRACHELOSPERMUM A~ SHIROFU-CHIRIMEN APO CGH HP PRICE: $ 8.75 Miniature selection of the Asian "Japanese Jasmine" sports pairs of tiny oval semi-glossed leathery leaves with pinkish-cream variegation; lovely clumping, shrubby tiny vine. This is extremely extremely slow growing and thus popular for mame. Translates as "White Variegated Crepe Paper"--a long ago distribution from Longwood 770-104 (we suspect B. Yinger originally scooped this up for Longwood).

42032TRACHELOSPERMUM ASIATICUM TEXAS APO CGH HH HP PRICE: $ 5.25 Very dark slim leaves with bright lime veins punctuate long internodes--creates a glossy thick carpet with considerable patience; bubblegum scented flowers. Cultivar name of this "Confederate Jasmine" suggests that can survive outdoor winters in most of the Gulf Coast region--but we've received decidedly mixed reports on this. Leaves purplish with chill.

51270 TULBAGHIA SIMMLERI AMARYL CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 South African "Mauve Onion" with evergreen succulent strap foliage; sweetly scented mauve colored flower heads. Good pot herb with fashionably edible flowers; seems to flower more readily if crowded in a 10"clay pot. We notice that this is now featured as an aquatic subject of late. Typically sent as divisions.

A FRAGRANT BOUQUET FOR YOU GREENHOUSE:

41548 ANREDERA [BOUSSINGAULTIA] CORDIFOLIA BAS HP TGH PRICE: $ 2.00 "Madeira Vine" or "Mignonette Vine" From tuberous roots rise rapidly growing stems with succulent leaves and racemes of heavily fragrant white flowers. Argentina native, thus the tubers are persistent in subtropical zones if below any frost line; in the north, either dig or bring in the container for winter. Nonetheless, always a favorite as a vigorous intensely fragrant windowgarden plant.

40099 CARISSA GRANDIFLORA BOXWOOD BEAUTY APO HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 V igorous clone of "Natal Plum: with nearly rounded leathery leaves thickly placed on the nearly spineless stems; much used in large bonsai especially for the corky barks on mature trunks. Must have sunlight, evenly moist soil and adequate fertilizer to work well as a pot plant.

This tends to have unpredictable cycles, so best inquire as to availability before ordering.

51027 CRINUM ASIATICUM VARIEGATUM AMARY TGH HP PRICE: $ 35.00 "Striped Bengal Lily" Large fleshy sword-like leaves are most liberally streaked white & cream; fragrant clusters of waxy white fls with purpled centers. Striking decorator specimen for the warm greenhouse--drops roots if soil is cool. Certainly the easiest and most dramatic for the hobby greenhouse; equally wonderful if brought out into your outdoor display pool for the summer (but does best if not submerged). Unlike most variegated Crinum cultivars, if given adequate warmth, this one NEVER drops foliage in a cycle of dormancy or in a fit of stubbornness, but incrementally adds more and more fantastically white striped succulent leafs to create a magnificent specimen.

51152 CRINUM JAPONICUM SHIMA-IRE AMARY CGH PRICE: $ 35.00 Large clone with bright central banded variegation on each ( broad fleshy leaf held in a crown of foliage above the long necked stem); R. Bennett's excellent clone which presents impressively fragrant blossoms--these immense heads of tubular ivory flowers are best initiated by letting the old mature bulb dry enough during the summer to enter a dormancy period. Start watering (or simply set in a pan kept full of water) heavily early fall to bring forth the richly scented winter flowers along with fresh brightly variegated foliage.

53502 PIPER AURITUM PIP PRICE: $ 17.50 "Root Beer Plant" or "False Sasparilla" Strictly a greenhouse plant with rigidly erect thick bamboo like stems supporting dramatic marvelously soft fragrant leaves. (Nonetheless, some of our customers tell us that they have grown it in a two gallon pot in their plant room.) These leaves play an important role in South American Andean cooking--a more pungent version of corn husks in Mexican cuisine. A wonderful and exotic specimen only demanding reliable warmth and reasonable levels of humidity to become a dramatic punctuation mark in your collection. We have included a photo looking up into the canopy of this handsome giant in our greenhouses.

40819 PITTOSPORUM TOBIRA VARIEGATUM PIT HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Tropical Mock Orange" Shrub with pseudo-whorls of glossy gray-green leaves margined white; orange-scented white flowers.
