TROPICAL PLANTS FOR THE HUMMINGBIRD ENTHUSIAST

99456 HUMMINGBIRD GARDEN COLLECTION: A very popular one--much reordered! A generous selection form such dramatic genera as Alstroemeria, Manettia, Cestrum, russelia, Crocosmia, cuphea, Justicia, Pachystachys, Clitoria, Abutilon, Monarda, Penstemon, Salvia, Hibiscus, Kniphofia, Lobelia, Malvaviscus, Campsis, and many more. We mix a few quickly performing tropicals in with the long term perennials & vines. 10 Plants for only PRICE: $35.00 To order specific plants from these genera, look over the list bellow. Tropicals are at the top, and winter hardy plants are at the bottom.

54474 ABUTILON HYBRIDUM HARDY ORANGE MALV CGH PRICE: $ 7.25A clone shared with us by Raulston somewhat root hardy in the very deep South (along the gulf and south): odd rangy habit with small dangling bronze-orange blossoms; survives Z8 if given a long hot summer in order to establish a heavy root mass below winter 's eventual frost line; seems to produce blossoms more consistently in warmer temperatures than most selections. Not particullary showy in Northern gardens as needs intense light to perform well, and thus not the best houseplant choice. Possibly the original clone designation for the cultivar now known as 'Marion Stewart.'

42276 ABUTILON HYBRIDUM LINDA VISTA MAL CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Beautiful nodding flowers an unusual shade of bronze orange with a striking red center and sometimes pale carmine veins. Very erect habit excellent for topiary work. Outstanding in a cool greenhouse with lots of sun as this hybrid reaches its height of bloom mid-winter.

42263 ABUTILON HYBRIDUM SAVITZII MALV CGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Leaf almost entirely white with small central green flame; pale bronzy salmon fls dangle from the tall stems. Best grown in very bright light in a cool greenhouse in intense climates as can burn in the heat of the deep South. But in zones with smaller numbers this not only performs in the winter greenhouse but forms a magnificant specimen in the summer garden or in container combinations as it flourishes in container culture given regular water and ample fertilizer. This is not the most extreme form (which is daunting to grow), but intermediate with 'Souvenir de Bonn.'

42193 ABUTILON HYBRIDUM VOODOO MALV CGH HP PRICE: $ 10.00 Erect shrub with many satin glossy nodding very, very dark red bellflowers. The darkest "Flowering Maple" blossom we have observed. Verging on maroon.

40005ABUTILON HYBRIDUM YELLOW CHIMES MAL HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Yellow out angled, nodding bellflowers with ochre clappers accent this vigorous "Flowering Maple" with soft fresh green leaves on self branching stems. Possibly a more reliably summer blooming selection of England's 'Moonchimes.' Has the reputation among our customers as being one of the few in this group of Hibiscus cousins performing well in a midwinter sunny window.

40007 ABUTILON STRIATUM AUREO-MACULATUM MAL HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Soft maple leaves richly flecked gold on a tightly branched shrub sporting many salmon bellflowers; striking in annual beds. Deservedly the most popular "Flowering Maple" as it is a brilliant display whether in flower or not; most effective when grown with plants displaying purple toned foliage. An unexpectedly subtle addition to outdoor summer beds, lighting up its companion plantings; although popular traditionally as a strong performer in the winter hobby greenhouse or plantroom as it reaches its peak blooming cycle late winter.

50565 ABUTILON VICTOR REITER [HYB] PRICE: $ 6.50 Erect woody stems festooned with spectacularly big nodding blossoms of festive tangerine; this "Giant Chime Flowering Maple" can be kept as a modest heavily flowering pot plant, or encouraged to easily reach 8' --thus perfect for training into standards or for backgrounds in the deep south. Blooms for a very long period as is sterile--often trained as a tropical nearly everblooming shrub, although easily scaled down with carefully considered pruning of the central leads. This is the only Abutilon our customers report reasonable success with reliable flowering even when grown in less than full sun. Very large statured.

41253 ABUTILON VICTORY [HYB] MAL HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Reiter hybrid of A. megapotamicum with strongly held laterally weeping branches perfectly displaying the charming show of ranks of dangling flared large yellow blossoms highlighted by darker-toned throat, as long as not exposed to considerable warmth year round. Perfect for hanging baskets, most impressive in windowboxes or tall urns when a bold horizontal plane is imperative in your design scheme. While at its blooming height in the winter greenhouse, we like it because it blooms even on into the initial heat of our Ohio River Valley summer heat--something we cannnot claim for other A. megapotamicum cultivars.

66777 ASCLEPIAS [GOMPHOCARPUS] PHYSOCARPA ASC HH CGH PRICE: $ 5.25 inflorescence "Hairy Ball" podded "Bladder Fruit" whose slim stems and willowy leaves are topped with creamy white flower clusters (beloved by butterflies) followed by big sea urchin shaped pods. South African easily reaching 6' in one summer. If you are of a somewhat more delicately evolved personality, please call this the "Swan Plant" as the clusters of creamy white (green tinted) blossoms are seen to resemble swans. Roots sometimes hardy in Z9 gardens; tho best grown as a tender annual outdoors.

40101 CARISSA GRANDIFLORA HORIZONTALIS APO HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 Compact; prostrate rigid stems; reduced spines; pinwheel flowers produce edible fruit; used in Japanese cascade bonsai as 'Naikoku-ume'; still uncommon in USA. Stems held in rigid horizontal planes, not weeping like 'Green Cascade.'

56568 CESTRUM AURANTIACUM SOL TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 The upright "Guatemalan Jasmine" presents very ornamental somewhat upright pyramidal clusters of bronzy orange tubular blossoms, distinctly but not agressively fragrant, once achieving maturity. We find that this lance leaved species usually needs to reach some size before reliably blooming. This tends to have unpredictable cycles, so best inquire as to availability before ordering. Needs sun and humidity to perform well, thus sometimes a challenge as a houseplant.

40110 CESTRUM DIURNUM [ALBUM] SOL HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Day Jessamine" or "Willow-lvd Jasmine" West indies shrub with clusters of greenish-white flowers, with petals bent backward, spearmint-fragrant by day; followed by even more dramatic and strikingly beautiful eggplant purple berries in abundant sprays so dense as to tip the branchlets. Demands bright light & even moisture for best results (not an ideal houseplant)--a traditional favorite in northern hobby greenhouses as produces much interest in mid-winter flower & late spring fruit with very low maintenance.

56569 CESTRUM ELEGANS SMITHII SOL TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 The downy foliage is topped with thick clusters of waxy tubular dusky pink fls richly scented. The humidity of most hobby greenhouses is sufficient to deter its archenemy, spider mite. This dusky softly foliaged central Mexican form is the easiest to consistently bloom in the plantroom or on the windowsill--most of its kindred insist on higher light and humidity to form and produce clusters of blossoms.

51919 CESTRUM NEWELLII [HYB] SOL TGH HP PRICE: $ 7.50 Handsome and dramatic "Red Night Blooming Jasmine" becomes a compact dark foliaged shrub with arching woody branches terminating in congested panicles of short tubular red blossoms transforming into tight clusters of purple red berries. Needs bright light to dependably maintain its status as the showoff beauty of the group. Certainly the most visually attractive of any Cestrum we grow although lacking the intensity of C. nocturnum's fragrance. Some botanists suggest that the red blossoms reflect an inflorescenceorescenceuence of Cestrum fasciculatum making this a vigorous hybrid form.

40112 CESTRUM NOCTURNUM SOL HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Night Blooming Jessamine/Jasmine" Slender nightshade shrub with open sprays of greenish white creamy tubular blossoms intensely fragrant at night, followed by white berries.

59210 CESTRUM NOCTURNUM X DIURNUM [HYB] SOL CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 This vigorous "Golden Night Jessamine" forms wide shrubs of attractively veined foliage topped with heads of bronzy gold fls opening from lilac buds; ever-blooming subtropical plant with fall colored foliage when grown outside in the south. Needs high light to bud in northern greenhouses. We've offered this for fifteen plus years, always hoping for a better name; now Tony Avent has pronounced it "Orange Peel" to the relief of all.

41488 COPROSMA KIRKII VARIEGATA [HYB] RUB CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.75 "Dwarf Mirror Plant" Dwarf densely branched willowy stems with small waxy lance leaves margined bright white; said to produce nearly translucent flowers dotted scarlet, which are followed by creamy white berries. C. acerosa x repens hybrid demanding full sun to flourish. Wonderful cascading from a hanging basket or from a summer windowbox; very popular with topiary designers as can readily be pinned to the mossed frame to form a wonderful peacock' s tail, or the white stripes of a zebra, and so on.

42105 CUPHEA AEQUIPETALA LYT TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.75 "Mexican Loosestrife" Slender arched stems, ranked w/ slim leaves, topped with petite lilac and green tubular blossoms with deep purple petals opposite four wider rosetoned petals. Height of bloom mid-winter. Easily grown also as a semi-aquatic. More a curosity (and potential genetic pool for hybridizers) than an imposing horticultural subject.

41927 CUPHEA DAVID VERITY [HYB] LYT HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Marvelous improvement on the traditional "Firecracker Plant" (C. ignea/platycentra) with bright red tubular flowers on dark foliaged vigorous plants. This high performer is the best choice for urns, containers, and large baskets; everblooming in a bright area of the hobby greenhouse.

40169 CUPHEA HYSSOPIFOLIA LYT HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 "Hawaiian Heather" everblooming lavender fls; compact bush.

41376 CUPHEA HYSSOPIFOLIA LINDA DOWNER LYT HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.00 Compact laterally-branching cultivar of "Dwarf Hawaiian Heather" selected at Downer's Greenhouses with sprays of pure white flowers; the perfect companion for the purple flowered `compacta.' Good flowering indoor bonsai subject.

41333 CUPHEA HYSSOPIFOLIA PALEST PINKIE LYT HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.00 A delicate color selection of the reliable "Hawaiian Heather" (a native of Guatemala, naturally) with very pale lilac ever blooming flowers on arched stems. In great demand.

42209 CUPHEA HYSSOPIFOLIA YATSUBUSA LYT HP PRICE: $ 5.25 Foliage larger, lilac flowered color more intense than the more elegant 'Compacta', yet keeps lateral low growth habit; as this selection grows rapidly, it will always appeal to bonsai designers.

42349 CUPHEA IGNEA LYT HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Mexican "Cigar Flower" Modest bushy shrublet, easliy pruned to any desired size, producing many dark red tubular flowers with dark band and white rim at the tip. Always the favorite of kids.

66923 CUPHEA IGNEA PINK PECULIAR LYT TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.50 Multitudes of pert pink "Cigar Flowers" (each with a dark tip) on compact wide spreading shrublets.

54371 CUPHEA MICROPETALA GRANADA ORANGE LYT TGH HP PRICE: $ 3.75 Dark glossy foliage on strong limber stems (habit of Cuphea aequipetala) display multitudes of white-orange tubular fls with fringed spidery tips. Mexican shrub with woody base. This is a most showy easily grown "Cigar Plant" species deserving much greater use in summertime urn, bedding, and windowbox use as well as winter greenhouse designs.

HIBISCUS CULTIVARS for the HUMMINGBIRD GARDEN!

The HIBISCUS: This wonderful group of plants offers great flowers and in some cases beautiful foliage. Flowers can often be large and everblooming--especially the new hybrids from the Duponts, the "Ragin' Cajun Color" which produce large ruffly blossoms on their own roots--not grafted as with some of the giant Florida hybrids. We never have enough of any one color to list on this website, but can send one in a group, so:
Why not try a HIBISCUS COLLECTION by ordering Stock #99001 for a group of 5 species & hybrids (usually double, single, & pagoda types), in their various colors & flowering seasons. 5 plants @ PRICE: $25.00

(For hardy perennial mallow types and for shrubby winter tolerant types such as the ever popular "Rose of Sharons", please see our listing of Hibiscus in the HARDY PLANT section on this website--we offer some truly outstanding ones.)

51707 HIBISCUS EETVELDIANUS MAPLE SUGAR [JUNGLE RED] MAL TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 This plant sometimes goes under the name of Hibiscus acetosella. The excellent "Maple Leaved Mallow" with blackish purple maple shaped (sure!) deeply lobed leaves blushed red in full sun. Engaging mimic of "Mary Jane" for an erect accent in planters and urns; if a consevatory subject, expect dusky sultry wine-toned winter mallow flowers; if grown near the fence in an urban setting, expect the leaves to be regularly stripped off (and not by insects) by passersby who will smoke them later.

41763 HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS AUSSIE QUEEN MAL HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.00 Beautiful small featured 'Cooperi' selection with new leaves emerging ivory speckled with pink and veridian green, then darker green with age highlighted ivory and rose; very fetching red blossoms. Z10 with protection.

40351 HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS COOPERI MALV HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Snowflake Hibiscus" cultivar with slim leaves lavishly splashed greenish-tan, white; single rose-red flowers. Handsome and easy.

66867 HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS GABRIEL MALV CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 So self branching that is it a natural as an urn subject. This Acadiana hybrid's showy orange blossoms fade on thru purple by the third day, marvelous with the pecan tan eyes! A Bobbie Dupont creation, Dupont Nurseries, "Home of Cajun Color."

41609 HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS GENERAL CORTEGES (VARIEGATA) MAL CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Remarkable plant from KSG Farms: The dark green wide leaves are splashed & margined creamy gold & milky gray; stout stems produce large deep red semi-double typical blossoms. This is not a small flowered 'Cooperi' type with small frilled blossoms. Remarkably beautiful, yet not of complex culture.

40355 HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS MATENSIS MAL HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.40 "Harlequin Hibisus" with dark rose & sienna splashed leaves darker than 'cooperi'; soft rose-orange flowers. Easy culture.

41612 HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS PAGODA MAL HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Similar to 'El Capitalio' but the stamenoid flower column is completely covered by a series of red and pink ruffles like many leveled pagoda petticoats. Vigorous growing plant if protected from chill.

41842HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS ROSE COOPERI MAL TGH CGH PRICE: $ 6.75 Warm rose and pink splashed foliage perfect with the mauve rose blossoms; an excellent container subject, being a much intensified version of the heirloom 'Matensis' in color and in vigor.

42161 HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS SENSATION MALV HP TGH PRICE: $ 7.00 Upright moulded fingered foliage perfect with the small but plentiful lilac to salmon blossoms with central white thumbprints. Given adequate heat, sunlight, and rich fertilizer, becomes a refined statured shrub of easy container culture. Very distinct from its kin.

33521 HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS SANIBEL RED SEEDLING MAL TGH PRICE: $ 8.75 Medium red flowers with darker red centers; vigorous traditional hybrid reaching the bloom peak midwinter. Availability is often limited as this is mainly of interest to the collectors.

40362 HIBISCUS SCHIZOPETALUS MALV HP CGH PRICE: $ 8.00 "Waltzing Ladies" or "Fringed Hibiscus" indicates the bright red, deeply cut and fringed recurved blossoms which dangle from slim arching stems; also "Skeleton Hibiscus." Very intolerant of root chill--it is native to Kenya. This is the most popular and most ordered for the hobby greenhouse! Always be careful when pruning as the "Japanese Lantern" blossoms are produced on the previous year's wood.

50036 JUSTICIA AUREA [JACOBINIA UMBROSA] ACAN CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 "Golden Crown" Heads of bright yellow fls top erect stems; blooms throughout winter; responds to severe pruning early summer to shape this very large statured shrub for the next smashing display--do not prune in the fall as you will destroy all the potential flower buds. Vigorous and very showy.

50091 JUSTICIA BRANDEGEANA JAMBALAYA ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Dwarf Shrimp Plant" A cultivar selected for its compact much-branched habit with attractive bronzy red drooping chain of bracts persisting much longer than the species form. Will bloom most seasons if given full sun and adequate fertilizer.

50040 JUSTICIA BRANDEGEANA VARIEGATA ACAN TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 "Snow Shrimp" Fabulous snowy white variegation on foliage fading to pure white margins; white bracts turn copper in bright light. Rare and striking sport. Not a totally successful houseplant unless you can provide the essential levels of humidity necessary to prevent spider mite. But with good light and a pebble tray this is a definite visual knock-out.

50042 JUSTICIA CARNEA [JACOBINIA CARNEA] ACAN TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 "King's Crown" or "Brazilian Plume" Erect stems bear large, very showy plumes of rose-pink tubular hooked fls. Knockout. Available usually in late Spring. Other times of the year, it might be propagated to order.

40458 MALVAVISCUS ARBOREUS MEXICANUS MALV CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.75 Formerly M. penduliflorus. "Turk's Cap" or "Scotsman's Purse" Hibiscus cousin with folded pendulous bright red fls with protruding stamens; easily bloomed shrub--reaching height of flowering midwinter when you most need the scarlet blossoms. Long a traditional hobby greenhouse standby as never fails to intrigue and amaze with the very showy yet unusual blossoms produced in such abundance.

41431 MALVAVISCUS ARBOREUS PAQUITO PINK MALV CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 "Pink Turk's Cap" Semi-gloss foliage ranked along the woody Hibiscus like stems; intriguingly furled pink flowers quite showy during the winter months.

54031 MALVAVISCUS GERMANDERII FIESTA MAL CGH HP HH PRICE: $ 17.00 Very showy "Dwarf Sleepy Mallow" with brightly variegated chunky leaves accented with many cute bright scarlet "Turk's Cap" blossoms; this brilliantly foliaged selection of this handsome small shrub made by Greg Grant. Much prized by collectors.

40459 MANETTIA INFLATA [LUTEO-RUBRA?] RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 "Firecracker Vine" Pubescent climber with tubular "Candy Corn" fls red with yellow tips; must have reliable levels of humidity and very bright light to set flower buds.

55538 NICOTIANA LANGSDORFII VARIEGATED SOL CGH [HH] PRICE: $ 8.00 "Variegated Tobacco" from Lance Reiners; ochre & cream splashes on the soft foliage; bunches of bright Snot green flowers with dark majenta blue eyes (anthers)--and famous for producing blue pollen! This fabulous creature needs high light / full sun to flourish; variegation will disappear in hot climates.

50048 PACHYSTACHYS LUTEA ACA CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 "Lollipop Plant" Large golden bracts resemble candles. This traditional winter greenhouse flowering cousin of the Justicia tribe is newly popular for its bright straw blond bracts in summer urns, bedding, and windowboxes.

40904 RUSSELIA EQUISETIFORMIS [JUNCEA] SCR HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 3.75 "Coral Fountain Plant" Gracefully arching fine rush-like glossy stems bear many scarlet red tubular flowers--a living "Firecracker Factory" in constant bloom with bright light. This has nearly endless uses in garden and container designs.

49436 RUSSELIA SARMENTOSA SCR TGH HP 5.50 An unusual "Red Firecracker" plant with tightly whorled bunches of petite bright red tubular flowers at every leafy node on gracefully wide arching stems; the salvia like leaves turn purplish in full sun with cooler temps. Easy in sun. (Although customers observe they've observed this species blooming heavily in the shade in Mexico.)
WINTER HARDY PLANTS FOR THE HUMMINGBIRD ENTHUSIAST

80114 CAMPANULA POSCHARSKYANA CAM HT PRICE: $ 4.50 "Yugoslavian Bellflower" Carpets of crimpted foliage foil perfectly the sprays of powder-blue cupped starflowers; once established, very drought resistent and a vigorous colonizer. That means do not plant this near tiny treasures which might not appreciate such a vigorous neighbor.

88666 CAMPANULA PUNCTATA HONDENSIS CAM HT PRICE: $ 5.00 Low carpeting foliage gives rise to strong stalks beautifully displaying the dramatic large purpled rose dangling bellflowers, spotted inside; larger and darker than 'Rubriflora' and quite delighted with the Midwest's climate, unlike so many other "Bellflowers" which slowly fade away in summer's heat. Long an excellent reliable performer in our gardens.

70227 CAMPSIS TAGLIABUANA MADAME GALEN [HYB] PRICE: $ 6.50 "Trumpet Vine" hybrid of grandiflora x radicans; aerial rootlets anchor creeping vines with pairs of pinnate leaves & terminal clusters of brassy salmon-red trumpet flowers enjoyed by all Hummingbirds. This hybrid blooms for many months each year once it is established.

83232 CROCOSMIA GEORGE DAVIDSON IRI HT PRICE: $ 5.25 Cheerful canary yellow flowers on strong wands; rapidly offsets to form a small statured clump of cheerful gladiola like foliage with many blossoms if given full sun and good fertilizer. Dependable and showy.

81578 CROCOSMIA LUCIFER [HYB] IRI HH HT PRICE: $ 4.00 Erect spear leaves perfectly foil the arched stems lined with bright red flowers--still the most reliable for a major eruption of scarlet in your garden beds; this is not a subtle addition to your display beds. Totally winter hardy for us.

88929 CROCOSMIA STAR OF THE EAST [HYB] IRI HH HT PRICE: $ 8.50 Dark tall pleated foliage topped with strong wands lined with terra-cotta buds opening into large starshaped wide brilliant tangerine orange flowers with deep cream eyes; by far the most dramatic and largest we grow; this 1912 George Davidson hybrid more properly is x crosmiiflora! Slow to offset, so always in limited quanities. In the north this is most successful as a large container subject (allowed to go dormant during the winter with the pot on its side) where it will again earn its space once those astounding blossoms appear.

81366 HEMEROCALLIS ALTISSIMA LIL HT PRICE: $ 15.00 "Chinese Daylily" Very tall six foot stalks present modest rusty yellow flowers with a distinct pastel umber zone on each slim petal; somewhat fragrant at night-- blooms into September. Distinct species. [We offer hybrids at the nursery--especially dwarf rebloomers]

81535 HIBISCUS BLUE RIVER II [HYB] MAL HT PRICE: $ 12.00 Winter's hybrid with 4' plus tall stalks producing pure white blossoms up to 15" across. Full sun, wet soils. Remarkable show--best to situate in a spot in your garden close to a path as visitors are so awed by this in bloom that they will trample over anything in order to hold and view a blossom face to face--no amount of signage, of large open bear traps, or cries from you will be effective in altering this immediate automatic response.

72100 HIBISCUS FLARE RED MOR HT PRICE: $ 8.00 Strong 4' clumping hardy hibiscus with giant flaming red blossoms with same saturation as 'Lord Baltimore' but the petals overlap to form a perfect circle and, as it is sterile, blooms until frost; even known to be alkaline tolerant if in a consistently moist site.

41886 HIBISCUS LOHENGRIN [HYB] MALV HT PRICE: $ 5.25 [H. paramutabilis x syriacus] Dark green maple-like leaves on woody shrubs blooming from July to frost with pure white flowers with wide carmine eye. Makes a handsome full shrub (with ambitions to become a hibiscus tree as stems are typically not damaged even in sub-zero winters) in our climate with longest blooming season of any caulescent Hibiscus--a larger stature and far longer bloom season than its "Rose of Sharon" parent.

41768 HIBISCUS MOY GRANDE MALV HT PRICE: $ 8.00 Strong growing hardy hybrid with giant rose red with pinkish lavender sheened 14" across blossoms over the strong 6' stems and clean, dark foliage; a wet planting site (even in alkaline soil) will encourage it to produce what are considred the largest blossom of its tribe! A H. grandiflorus x mocheutos hybrid from Ying Doon Moy at the San Antonio Botanic Garden.

71196 HIBISCUS SYRIACUS PURPURATUS VARIEGATUS MAL HT PRICE: $ 18.50 White bordered foliage; double red-maroon blossoms never quite open completely, remaining very dark "Chocolate Bonbons" to give a very unique appearance. From UNCR distribution; not vigorous, but certainly a curiosity

70945 HIBISCUS SYRIACUS WOODBRIDGE MAL HT PRICE: $ 7.50 "Rose of Sharon" selection with rich deep rose red flowers accented with crimson eyes. Very distinct color.

89221 HIBISCUS SYRIACUS WOODBRIDGE SEEDLING MAL HT PRICE: $ 3.50 "Rose of Sharon" selection with rich deep rose red flowers accented with crimson eyes. Very distinct color. We are currently offering seedlings from this selection at a low price for the cautious beginner, or the collector who wants to take a chance on a new color. Pictures are the same as above because these are a year old but have not bloomed.

41767 HIBISCUS SYRIACUS WHITE WITH SCARLET EYE PRICE: $ 8.50 This selection of "Rose of Sharon" sports unusually large frilly white flowers with very dramatic scarlet red centers. Heavy bloomer, vitorous grower. A random seedling here which outperforms the named cultivars (such as 'Helene') without fail every season.

70789 HIBISCUS TOSCA (HYB) MALV HT PRICE: $ 5.25(paramutabilis x syriacus); Ruffled orchid to magenta flowers (much larger than its "Rose of Sharon" parent) with dramatic carmine eye; blooming heavily on dark foliaged woody shrub until frost--this Jim Snyder selection often emerges in very chill springs with faintly variegated leaves.

88890 LAVANDULA INTERMEDIA DILLY DILLY LAB HT HH PRICE: $ 4.75 A "Hardy Lavender" selected for its Z5 hardiness (if given perfect winter drainage & full sun in summer) and for its large dramatic fragrant violet blue flower spikes reaching a foot in height (usually highlighted with butterflies), fantastic arrayed over the wide spreading bright silver gray fragrant foliage; self-heading to create dense buns.

80342 PENSTEMON HIRSUTUS PYGMAEUS SCR HT PRICE: $ 5.75 "Dwarf Beard's Tongue" A native minature enough for your trough garden: A petite mat of cerrate pubescent foliage with free flowering violet nodding blossoms. Lovely.

80842 PENSTEMON HUSKER RED [GLACIALIS] SCR HT PRICE: $ 5.00 Dramatic evergreen wine-purple foliage beautifully sets off the foot tall inflorescence of ivory flowers produced over several months. Possibly more accurate as P. digitata `Husker Red.'

81128 PHYSOSTEGIA VIRGINIANA VARIEGATA LAB HT PRICE: $ 4.25 "Obedient Plant" selection with each rigidly angled leaf neatly margined bright white to beautifully foil the lilac "Dragonhead" flowers. Most emphatic with moist roots in horse compost in full sun. Will not easlily survive any competition from surrounding perennials.

55513 SALVIA NAPIFOLIA LAB HT HH PRICE: $ 5.75 LIMITED AVAILABILITY A new attractively foliaged species with true deep blue flower spikes reaching 2 feet once established. This is the Plantworld clone.

31252ZANTEDESCHIA AETHIOPICA IVORYARAC CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Fleshy rich green foliage perfect for the large ivory white "Calla Lily" blossoms; best performance in the cool winter greenhouse with ample sun; nonetheless, our customers often grow it in a moist to boggish location in full sun outdoors during the summer and it blooms--a bouquet in your garden! Some plants will simply not read the text books (alone read my meandering pronouncements) . .

51950 ZANTEDESCHIA AETHIOPICA NATAL ARAC HH CGH HT PRICE: $ 35.00Impressive "Winter Hardy Calla Lily" from a Natal collection by high mountain bogs. Rubbery green foliage and typical white "Calla" blossoms once established (will take several years) and mature--ours in Zone 6b took 5 years to bloom. We received this originally from the late C.R. Waldron. These will be sent as starter sized seedlings.

TROPICAL PLANTS FOR THE BUTTERFLY ENTHUSIAST

41485 BARLERIA OBTUSA ACA CGH PRICE: $ 6.75Striking spineless fast growing herbaceous shrublet which flourishes in an exposed, even dry, setting where it will produce Acanthus type blossoms ranging from blue through mauve to pink. A new candidate for summer urns, windowboxes, and mixed containers as well as a good performer in the winter greenhouse.

49461 BARLERIA REPENS ROSEA VIOLET CASCADE ACA CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Out arching slim stems cascade under the weight of the soft petite leaves; terminal clusters of lovely violet blossoms fading to old rose magenta. Height of bloom in late fall.

50014 DICLIPTERA [JACOBINIA] SUBERECTA ACAN CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.75 Cupped oval gray leaves, richly velvety haired surfaces giving a silvery tone, on low arching stems; showy brick-red two lipped rust orange designed blossoms in "King's Crown" heads appear during winter. From Uruguay, where this is known as the "Hummingbird Plant," this undemanding carpeting or cascading "shrimp" cousin (while traditionally a greenhouse basket or groundcover subject) has recently become popular as an undemanding attractive summer urn and windowbox item adding a soft velvety tone to any combination.

53023 HEDYCHIUM CORONARIUM ZIN TGH HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Butterfly Ginger" Fragrant white flowers top very tall stalks. The heavily perfumed ivory petals are used in Hawaiian leis, hence, also known as the "Garland Flower." Evergreen species easy to grow with good light.

IMPATIENS for the 2012 SEASON

The IMPATIENS: A suprisingly diverse group of very hard working bloomers (with just a few, like 'Kew,' grown mainly for foliar knockout duty) from the fabulous nearly prostrate I. repens with its reddish kidney shaped leaves on fat cascading magenta red stems and outsized blossoms, to the tall elegant I. niamniamensis crew with thick succulent stems presenting astounding richly colored spurred cornucopia blossoms, the "Seashell" blossoms of the auricoma x walleriana hybrids, and on to the more familiar walleriana/sultanii "Buzy Lizzy" group of which we have gradually aquired and bred an outstanding range of variegated cultivars and petite dwarf hybrids over the years. Why not try the IMPATIENS COLLECTION listed below.

by ordering Stock #99107 to receive 5 labeled plants @ PRICE: $12.00 which typically include doubles, variegates, odd species, high performance dwarf 'Hawaiian' hybrids, etc. Let us know if these are to be used for summer bedding, urns, window boxes, greenhouse bloomers or litegarden showoffs, so that we can choose appropriately & ship at a safe date. None survive a serious chill, tending to fail whether planted in cool soil or shipped during cold weather. Without exception Impatiens suffer foliar (and sometimes stem tip) minor cosmetic damage when shipped because the foliage is very succulent and delicate. If you feel that you will be unable to grow these out beyond their normal shipping stress (for they resprout easily and immediately to basic TLC), please order a different group of plants and purchase bedding type Impatiens at your local nursery instead of ordering the following by mail.

WINTER HARDY PLANTS FOR THE BUTTERFLY ENTHUSIAST

89007 AGASTACHE GOLDEN JUBILEE LAB HT PRICE: $ 5.50 Celebrated at the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002, this new form emerges with crowns of crinkled purpled leaves transforming into richly aromatic rosettes of golden yellow foliage; fluffy lavender flower spikes. Needs perfect drainage.

Certainly the most vigorous and showy form in Z6 gardens affluter with butterflies for many months.

70501 CALLICARPA JAPONICA VER HT HH PRICE: $ 4.50 "Japanese Beautyberry" Small shrub with oval leaves; pale pink flowers (beloved by butterflies) followed by striking blue-violet berry-like drupes in clusters. Certainly one of the most charming shrubs for the garden, often treated as a perennial and cut to the ground each winter so that the new arching stems will form a perfect hemisphere of startling fall berries which are produced in great abundance since this winter harcy Lantana cousin blooms on NEW growth, thus allowing you to sheer the woody stems back as severely as you wish each winter after the birds have enjoyed their feast. This is an excellent performer in the midwestern garden.

88420 CARYOPTERIS CLANDONENSIS LONGWOOD BLUE VER HT PRICE: $ 7.50 A tried and true selection much prized for its thickly stemmed rounded shape of elegantly toned gray green foliage so perfect with the vivid violet blue flowers. Needs sun and good drainage to flourish.

71727 CARYOPTERIS CLANDONENSIS SNOW FAIRY VER HH HT PRICE: $ 12.00 The delicate "Blue Mist" flowers line the long elegant three foot stems (once the clump has matured--initialy shorter) which are punctuated with pairs of serrate leaves--each strikingly margined with bright white variegation. An amazingly beauty which has proven to be hardy Zones 5 thru 9--but note that in the colder zones this is a perennial (maintaining no stems above the freeze line) reemerging beautifully from the soil every spring; it is a shrub only in warm climes.

71261 CARYOPTERIS CLANDONENSIS WORCESTER GOLD VER HT PRICE: $ 4.75 "Golden Leaved Blue Spiraea" From England comes this golden lime (fading to ocher in fall) foliaged shrub with late blue flowerws tinged lilac.

88829 CRYPTOTAENIA JAPONICA ATROPURPUREA UMB HT PRICE: $ 3.25 Very handsome "trendy" perennial especially helpful by lending a dusky rich purple foliage foil to a gold & white Hosta planting. "Purple Japanese Celery" is also successful as a bog plant, the rather oddly formed buff pink blushed white flower sprays (nearly umbels) appear late summer--every butterfly in your garden will make a pilgrimage to the feast. To see it is to want it. Winter hardy at least to the Artic Circle; we cannot safely say it will survive the seasons further north than that.

80761 DIANTHUS FIRST LOVE [HYB] CAR HT PRICE: $ 4.75The "Everblooming Pink" tagline indicates its considerable success as a winter greenhouse performer (and now it is also newly discovered by designers of patio container combinations) as this fastigate cultivar does not languish in summer heat like many of its carnation cousins; nonetheless, when tried in outdoor beds, it still manages a rigorous upright habit supporting fringed "Pinks" opening creamy pale pink gradually fading to violet, then faded magenta. Still: best to take some cuttings for the winter coldframe, as tends to fade away if winter soil becomes too saturated with moisture while the plant is dormant.

89220 ECHINACEA PURPUREA COMP HT PRICE: $ 3.50 Our native "Purple Coneflower" in all its simplicity and beauty at an especially low Glasshouse Works price.

81827 EUPATORIUM (AGERATINA) AROMATICUM JOCIUS' VARIEGATE COMP HT PRICE: $ 6.50 New "Smaller White Snakeroot" selection of John Jocius with leaves brilliantly frosted creamy white, a perfect combination with the flat-topped clusters (like "Boneset") of fuzzy white Ageratum-like blossoms; neither aromatic nor toxic; customers have claimed to observe over six species of butterflies visiting this at the same time. We introduced this for John some years ago and are delighted at its current popularity in northwestern and mid-atlantic gardens & nurseries. Maybe someday even more of John's fellow Chicago growers will embrace it! Recently the Genus for the plant has supposedly been changed to "Ageratina."

80304 LYSIMACHIA CLETHROIDES PRI HT PRICE: $ 4.75 "Gooseneck Loosestrife" Soft leaves cloak erect stems topped with curving racemes of small white flowers giving this a marvelously antique quality.
