The trendy HARDY BAMBOO genera offered here thoughout this winter hardy plant section aphabetically are Indocalamus, Phyllostachys, Pleioblastus, Sasa, Sasella, Semiarundinaria, Shibataea, and in the TROPICAL section, Bambusa. Note also that we offer the bamboo-like grass, Arundo; Nandina, the "Heavenly Bamboo" shrubs, and in the local idiom's "Perennial Bamboo," the Polygonum cuspidatum tribe.

56052 BEGONIA GRANDIS EVANSIANA BEG CGH H PRICE: $ 4.00 (tuberous) The "Hardy Begonia" survives sub-zero with mulch; canes with olive green leaves, red-accented, & with clouds of pink blossoms freely produced early fall; this slug resistent novelty also performs well in containers.

56257 BEGONIA GRANDIS EVANSIANA ALBA BEG CGH HT PRICE: $ 4.75 (tuberous). The lovely bronzed foliage topped with white flowers--not easily produced, as in the species form. Not as vigorous as the pink flowered form.

56725 BEGONIA KAYLEN [HYB] HH HT CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 (semp) "Hardy Wax Begonia" Appears to be an unusually full statured, dark foliage "Wax Begonia" with easily produced rose-pink (to red) blossoms; but beneath the soil it forms real tubers--has survived (so "they" say) short shots of zero degrees! The results of a prolonged winter bout would not be similar (try this as an experiment--although lauded as "winter hardy" in articles, we have had no success overwintering it in outdoor beds).

70052 BERBERIS THUNBERGII ATROPURPUREA GOLD RING BER HT PRICE: $ 8.00Reddish-purple leaves with yellow-ochre margins. We cannot ship this species of "Barberry" to certain states.

72826 BERBERIS THUNBERGII AUREA NANA BER HT PRICE: $ 10.00 "Dwarf Golden Barberry" forms a wide short thickly foliaged shrublet with bright butter yellow leaves, quite sunproof for us, with reddish bronze tones developing with fall chill. Certain states prohibit shipping.

71331 BERBERIS OTTAWENSIS SILVER MILE [HYB] BER HT PRICE: $ 5.25 AVAILABILITY LIMITED CURRENTLY Bright splashes of pink & white variegation slash the dusky purple leaves of this deciduous hybrid of B. thunbergii x vulgaris; multitudes of tiny daffodil shaped blossoms are usually followed by showy red fall fruit. Slow to establish; becomes a very large irregular shrub in time. We cannot ship to numerous states.

70499 BERBERIS TRICANTHOPHORA [WISLEYENSIS] BER HT PRICE: $ 5.25 "Threespine Barberry" Evergreen central Chinese shrub with serrate holly mimic leaves, glaucous beneath, turning purplish with winter; rows of daffodil shaped lemon yellow flowers' reddish tinge gives pink effect in early spring. Contrary to some texts, this handsome stiftly arching shrub stays completely evergreen during the winter in our gardens in Z6b. Unfairly overlooked shrub which visually enhances any conifer planting.

80739 BRIZA MEDIA CODE PRICE: $ 3.75 Hardy species of "Quaking Grass" reaching 2 feet. Eurasian naturalized in North America where is known as "Trembling Hearts" for the heart-shaped seed heads so very popular in dried arrangements. Very beautiful here grown in high shade with wet feet.

71684 BUDDLEIA DAVIDII GUINEVERE LOG HT PRICE: $ 8.00 A short-statured, much branched "Butterfly Bush" selection with spikes of extremely dark blackish purple indigo flowers. The darkest spikes of any we have trialed--especially effective with the silvery foliage.

70625 BUDDLEIA DAVIDII HARLEQUIN LOG HT HH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Variegated Summer Lilac" Reddish purple flowers with orangish eye, on stems cloaked with yellow margined leaves hardening to parchment white; said to be a sport of 'Royal Red.' Not reliably root hardy in our climate.

Fun to grow near the variegated 'Harlequin'--both tend to drop their upper branches during a severe winter, but resprout from basal roots; indeed, for the most regular outline and for the production of larger flowerheads, many plantsmen always stool these to the ground each early spring.

Excellent color and habit, gradually forming a perfect tightly foliaged mound.

41553 BUXUS MICROPHYLLA COMPACTA [KINGSVILLE] BUX HT CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 "Kingsville Dwarf Boxwood" The twiggy, dense habit of this famous clone has made it the favorite of bonsai lovers. Very tiny dull-gloss leathery leaves on corky-barked trunks, easily trained into wide low specimens; survives indoors more successfully than other cultivars..

41550 BUXUS MICROPHYLLA JAPONICA MORRIS MIDGET BUX HT CGH PRICE: $ 5.25 "Dwarf Boxwood" Very compact wide-spreading stature (a round smooth habit with dense twigy branches); bright green wide oval leathery leaves. Bonsai subject as well as knot garden hedge and rockery star dating back to Dr. Skinner's selection at the Morris Arboretum where a forty year old plant has reached the remarkably daunting height of one and onehalf foot! (Nurseries in the Baltimore area report that this will reach three feet in height and four in width when reaching the ripe old age of forty.) Because of its urge to go hemispherical, this is by far the best candidate for shaping into a ball outline for any garden design strong on orbs. Yes, we know that orbs are in. We are not square.

A graceful willowy habit with ranks of small glossy elongated (oval) leaves emerging yellow lime then hardening to green on the slim stems. Very distinct look and habit.

41787 BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS AUREO-PENDULA BUX HT CGH PRICE: $ 7.75 Slender erect habbit with elegantly drooping side branches cloaked in small curved leathery leaves of deep green, varying in level of bright creamy variegation from random streaks & splashes to entire leaves of cream. While slow growing, this is a very beautiful distinctive clone, gaining popularity as a dense accent in a collection of container plants, especially in the cool (that is, for Camellias or Cymbidiums) hobby greenhouse or conservatory. Left to its own devices, this "Weeping Variegated English Box" achieves an upright fountain shape, reaching a full seven feet in height in a mere twentyfive year period.

71104 BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS GRAHAM BLANDY BUX HT PRICE: $ 4.00 Very distinctive "Fastigate Boxwood" quickly growing into an exceptionally narrow tall plant; the parent seedling has now reached some 20' yet is only 3' wide, resembling a broad-lvd fastigate Irish Yew. Perhaps the alternate name of 'National' reflects its selection from seedlings at the Blandy Experimental Farm (in Virginia) around 1936 and named by Lynn Batdorf.

41972 BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS ELEGANTISSIMA BUX HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 6.50 Small elongated leathery leaves variegated lemon on lime; tall slim habit with age.

41345 BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS LATIFOLIA AUREA BUX HT HP PRICE: $ 6.75 "Variegated Boxwood" Creamy-yellow irregular streaks as well as many cream margins on exceptionally wide oval leathery leaves with glaucous surface; seems identical to clones sold as 'Cream Splash' and 'Bayliss' elsewhere. May be the same as the 'Stybing Gold' now appearing on the market.

41346 BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS MARGINATA BUX HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 7.75 British clone which has yellow-rimmed (gradually hardening to dusky ivory) dark leathery oval leaves; A favorite for bonsai, also making an excellent showy pot subject; although for us is hardy in zone 6, this very showy cultivar can and will burn if planted where it receives bright winter sun. We follow the European and Asian nomenclature and consider the slim lime yellow-rimmed form (with narrower outline) to be 'Elegantissima' and the bright gold oval leaved form to be 'Sunburst.' These various clone names are very very mixed up in the nursery trade.

71393 BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS NEWPORT BLUE BUX HT PRICE: $ 4.75 Much sought-after "Squat Box" with low wide self-branching habit (in 14 years may be 18" tall, 38" wide) and rich glaucous leathery foliage. 1940s selection at Boulevard Nursery once touted for clipped mini-hedges; now popular for bonsai.

41556 BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS VARDER VALLEY (VADAR VALLEY) BUX HT CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 "Balkins Boxwood" Erect stature with thick leathery leaves with rounded tips, noted for green winter color; can reach four feet if one lives long enough! Seems to be the best winter performer in our display gardens. Very slow growth in our climate. This is often spelled in several ways.

71149 BUXUS SINICA INSULARIS [JUSTIN BROUWERS] BUX HH HT PRICE: $ 4.75 Beautiful foliage narrower, habit taller, and a far deeper green 'Kingsville.' Very fine textured fastigate dwarf "Korean Boxwood" eventually maturing to configure a tall cone outline; quite deliberate in growth , thus trustworthy as a perfect dark green vertical accent for the rockery.
