80306 MACLEAYA CORDATA PAP HP PRICE: $ 6.25 2"Plume Poppy" Bold showy calloped leaves with an outline mimicing that of the hardy fig, silvery beneath, on tall stalks topped with plumes of tiny white flowers appearing to be pinkish buff from a distance. Chinese "Tree Celandine" soon forms impressive clumps. Effective close up; impressive as a backdrop.

71663 MACFADYENA UNGUIS-CATI [BIGNONIA TWEEDIANA] BIG HH PRICE: $ 6.75 From Argentina, this vigorous Zone 8 "Cat's Claw Vine" clambers with neat claw tendrils under small attractive leathery leaves; showy clusters of tubular cupped bright chrome yellow blossoms are 4" across. Excellent for the cool greenhouse in the north; fab outdoor vine in the deep south where it forms a considerable tuber underneath.

71731 MAGNOLIA RICKI MAG HT PRICE: $ 12.00 Beautiful full habit developing into a small tree or giant shrub with freely produced flowers of white twisted sepals revealing the rich purple interiors. Even though it can become a small tree in time; yet it can easily shaped (limbed up) for the small garden. Very reliable flower show every spring as the blooms, unlike many Magnolias, appear well after the last frost. We often have various others from the "Little Girls" such as 'Betty' available in limited numbers for walkin customers here at the nursey.

81635 MATELEA CAROLINENSIS [SUBEROSA] ASC HT HH PRICE: $ 5.50 Twining subshrub from North America with odd Ceropegia-like inflorescence. From NCBG distribution under former genus name, Gonolobus. A perennial twining Milkweed.

80914 MELISSA OFFICINALIS ALL GOLD [GOLD LEAF] LAB HT CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 "Golden Lemon Balm" Cultivar shared with us by Henry Ross; the richly scented pubescent leaves keep bright chartreuse-yellow coloration throughout the season, unlike the quickly fading regular variegated variety. Even when we fail to list this, customers order it anyway: so we probably will just offer this cheerful fragrant bit of plant sunlight indefinitely. Give it full sun and good moisture for the best performance.

70312 MENISPERMUM CANADENSE MEN HT PRICE: $ 10.00 "Moonseed" or "Yellow Parilla" Woody twining vine with very attractive oval leaves, pubescent beneath; tiny flowers followed by odd drupe fruit; dried rhizome has alkaloids of medicinal value--N. American cousin of curare source, Chondrodendron. If it likes its site, this native can become quite rampant--give it a big background fence to conquer.

88445 MENTHA PIPERITA CHOCOLATE MINT [HYB?] LAB HT PRICE: $ 3.00 Deep green-purple richly scented leaves on upright magenta toned stems forming a vigorous clump; very potent leaves used in drinks and deserts. Peppermint patty bronzed foliage; rich lavender flowers on foot tall clumps.

80309 MENTHA SUAVEOLENS [ROTUNDIFOLIA] VARIEGATA LAB HT PRICE: $ 4.75 "Wooly Pineapple Mint". Lax tostled stems bend under sweetly fragrant tomentose leaves with large white variegated splashes; white flowers highly decorative. Easy container plant for those fearful of its traveling ways.

71222 METASEQUIOA GLYPSTROBIOIDES TAX HP PRICE: $ 6.00 "Dawn Redwood" This is the famous tree discovered in only one location in China years ago. It has proven to be quite hardy in northern climates. We recommend if you have the space. There are great clones of this out now. Check for these in our offerings from time to time.

72747 METASEQUIOA GLYPSTROBIOIDES OGON (GOLD RUSH) TAX HP PRICE: $ 65.00 "Golden Dawn Redwood" The leaves/needles emerge blond yellow, then darken to green gold by late summer, becoming, with early chill, bronzy orange brown before falling. 'Golden Oji' as a seedling at Japan's Oji Paper; will doo well in full sun.

88973 MISCANTHUS SACHARRIFOLIUS GOTEMBA GOLD GRA HT PRICE: $ 18.00 Impressive seven foot clumps of this Z5/6 specimen will brighten and heighten the back of any bed. The bold impressive leaf blades glow with brightly striped gold and lime and rich green. Asian with wandering habit once it is established, giving you clumps to share with plant friends who will ask for this distinctive tall decorative grass they have never before seen. We do offer many of the basic tall variegated Miscanthus at the nursery, but as many reach considerable size quickly, prefer to sell them here rather than attempt to ship them.

80992 MISCANTHUS SINENSIS ZEBRINUS GRA HT PRICE: $ 8.75 Variegated Porcupine Grass or Zebra Grass. This is a reintroduction of an old favorite. This used to be the most popular of all the clumping grasses. Notice the wonder cross design in the tall blades. A plant can get to you 5 or 6 feet after a couple years.

70874 MORUS ALBA 'SNOWFLAKE LOBED' MOR HT HH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Snowflake Mulberry" Very deeply lobed leaves margined in white. We are not sure what its hardiness range will be. Supplies can be limited as this is heavily ordered--please do not order if you need this rarity immediately.

40646 MUEHLENBECKIA AXILLARIS [NANA] POL HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 7.75 "Mattress Vine" Very dwarf prostrate wiry "vine" with short branched stems forming matted clumps of dark glossy teardrop leaves; waxy flowers usually in twos. New Zealand. Winter hardiness depends on location location location.

57496 MUSA BASJOO MUS HH CGH $ 12.75 Prefering cooler climes, this "Northern Novelty Banana" from the Ryuku Islands sends up large pale green draping tropical foliage from rootstocks needing winter protection (with mulch this is quite winter hardy in our Zone 6 gardens); odd infl; white pulp fruit insipid; Japanese use 10' plant for fiber. In cooler climates such as ours the head of oliage is more compact and decorative than photos of clumps grown further south where leaves are longer and thus usually torn & shredded. Note the photo in the accompanying images taken just after the first hard freeze--still a dramatic creature, of considerable bulk after its third season! Soon after the next frost, we suggest you cut the succulent trunks off even with groundlevel and mulch with a very coarse material which will not soak up and hold a lot of moisture over the giant roots below.

57498 MUSA [MUSAELLA] LASIOCARPUS MUS HH CGH PRICE: $ 18.00 The extremely rare "Chinese Yellow Banana" pictured with snow on its gray green tropical foliage where native (but the root clump will not survive sub-terranian frost in our experience); small statured (good in pots to display the very distinctive swollen leaf bases); striking artichoke shaped inflorescence of butter yellow flowers on a separate spike arising from the ground level if this is given chill (but do not freeze the roots) winter cycles. Yunnan native of considerable architectural beauty; very easy to grow as a container subject as long as kept somewhat dry during its winter rest (best to remove dried foliage at this point), then resuming watering and fertilizing once sunlight is strong once more.

The group of rock garden plants often referred to as Heavenly Bamboo. The Nandina domestica Tribe. Always popular!

70315 NANDINA DOMESTICA COMPACTA BER HT $ 8.00 Very miniature "Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo" with bronze red & maroon fall-winter foliage.

71391 NANDINA DOMESTICA KURIJUSE [SAN GABRIEL] BER HT $ 12.50 The marvelous "Leafless Heavenly Bamboo" with leaves like pine needles all intersticed into a filiform mound. Remarkable bonsai subject; a cluster of these in the rockery makes one wonder. This does circulate under different clone names. It is also known as Nandina San Gabriel and Nandina domestica filamentosa. We received it originally from Japan under the clone name of Nandina domestica Kurijuse.

71108 NANDINA DOMESTICA MOYER'S RED BER HT $ 8.00 Scarlet "Heavenly Bamboo" selection which remains clear red all summer, taking on some purple tones in winter; intricate lacy foliage rigidly held in horizontal planes.

70912 NANDINA DOMESTICA UMPQUA CHIEF BER HT $ 10.00 Stiff erect central stalks clothed in a filigree of scarlet toned leaflets; smaller statured and far more brilliant than the species form. While rigidly held, the foliage lends a lacy effect.

70638 NANDINA DOMESTICA UMPQUA PRINCESS BER HT $ 10.00 Purple-red foliage; smallest of the 'Umpqua'selections. Can be deciduous in our more severe winters.

70316 NANDINA DOMESTICA UMPQUA WARRIOR BER HT $ 10.00 Very hardy "Heavenly Bamboo" with orange-red pinnate foliage on parallel erect stalks; white fls, then red berries. Creates a striking bonsai plant. Largest of the 'Umpqua' selection with more open foliage & fruit panicles.

70315 NANDINA DOMESTICA WOOD'S DWARF BER HT $ 10.00 Reddish-coppery pinnate foliage make this very compact clone of "Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo" perfect for rockeries. Selected by Ed Wood from `Nana Purpurea.' Japanese "Nanten" translates as "Heavenly Bamboo." Holds foliage all winter here.

80968 NIPPONANTHEMUM (CHRYSANTHEMUM) NIPPONICUM COMM HH CGH PRICE: $ 6.75 Shrubby "Nippon Daisy" from Japan with stout stems studded with thick widely toothed spatulate leaves with a glossy jade quality; big white daisy flowers with bold greenish-yellow eyes late fall. The "Montauk Daisy" while hardy here with good drainage, blooms so late that we grow them in large low mum pots so we can bring them into shelter in the event we suffer an unusually early killing frost; also effective in containers brought into the greenhouse mid fall to prolong the marvelous display. Needs perfect drainage and light mulch to survive the outdoor winters.

80328 NYMPHAEA HYBRIDA ARC-EN-CIEL NYM HB PRICE: $ 35.00 "Variegated Waterlily" Amazing selection with glossy dramatic leaves freckled white and splotched pink--often entire pink round leaves are produced in fall; the beautiful amply produced double white blossoms fade to pearl. We send heavy divisions. If you maintain a small pond or a large patio tub, this will give you the best of both flower and foliage with many lovely blossoms (not giant, but double) while always amazing with the brilliant decorative pink variegated floating foliage. A number of customers over the years have created a small pool just to accomodate this easily grown creature after seeing its stunning beauty here in the display pond.

83092 OENANTHE JAVANICA FLAMINGO UMB HT PRICE: $ 4.25 Striking, yet easily grown, Korean "Water Celery" with lacy foliage variegated white & tinged violet & blushed pink: a quick colorful (but not aggressively invasive in wet conditions) low groundcover topped with lovely umbels of ivory white. Good cascader in a basket (which can NEVER dry out); very popular as a container plant in your aquatic tub on your deck or patio. Unrivaled visually to create a beautiful pink lacy groundcover in a seep or boggy area in your garden which otherwise would be overtaken by weeds.

65529 OPHIOPOGON JABURAN [HORT] LIL HH HT CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Black Snakebeard" Very elegant erect bunched fans of deep green leathery slim leaves slowly clump to form a beautiful carpet if protected from severe winter exposure. Extremely popular as a vertical accent in small container designs.

40678 OPHIOPOGON JAPONICUS ARITAKI LIL HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 "Silver Mist Lilyturf" with short narrow strap leaves richly lined in cream-white, pink tinted in high light. Rare because this is slow to offset; considered at least Z7--but would require considerable winter protection. Evidentally same as clone in European horticulture known as `Folius Albo-striatus.' Fabulous small container subject.

40679 OPHIOPOGON JAPONICUS GYOKU RYU LIL HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 6.25 Beautiful "Lilyturf" clumps of small very slim blades in tidy upright clumps; the "Jewel Dragon Plant" of Japan. Quite winter hardy in SE Ohio, but often with minor tip-burn. Nonetheless, in our experience, this is still the slowest to spread into a mat, as does not offset as willingly as 'Kyoto Dwarf' with its comparatively much more short and wide leafblades. Diabetes cure in China

81682 OPHIOPOGON JAPONICUS KIGIMA FUKIDUMA LIL HT CGH PRICE: $ 28.00 Marvelous "Striped Dragon Plant" with densely packed emerald green compact very slim narrow leaves randomly streaked with white/cream/gray varying markedly from one fan to the next. Remove any reversions of this rarity immediately! Best considered an alpine greenhouse subject.

40680 OPHIOPOGON JAPONICUS KYOTO DWARF LIL HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 5.75 Marvelous tiny black-green tufts of tight leathery leaf fans--much shorter and much wider "blades" than 'Gyoku Ryu.' This is the choice for underplanting bonsai. Excellent groundcover in your Zen garden.

40681 OPHIOPOGON PLANISCAPUS ARABICUS (NIGRESCENS) LIL HP HT PRICE: $ 8.50 "Black Mondo Grass" Famous leathery ribbon leaves purple-black; clumps produce off-white flowers, then pale blue-green fruit. Survives our SE Ohio winters if given protection from winter sun.

89198 ORIGANUM KENT BEAUTY LAB HT CGH PRICE: $ 7.00 Remarkably beautiful chains of pendant bracts nodding at the tips of arched stems emerging from a woody rootstock, perfect with the glaucous foliage. A hybrid of O. scabrum crossed with rotundifolium found at Washfield Nursery in Kent.

83049 ORIGANUM LAEVIGATUM HOPLEY'S PURPLE LAB HT HH PRICE: $ 5.75 Scented stems, cloaked with tidy small rounded leaves, topped with bright violet purple blossoms; great in containers, or rock wall to display the rich purple-bronze fall foliage. Great butterfly plant.

71232 ORIXA JAPONICA AUREA RUT HT HH PRICE: $ 6.50 Very lovely woody Japanese shrub with shimmery waxy fragrant leaves emerging a rich lime gold; racemes of petite greenish blossoms. While quite attractive as a container plant, this beautiful golden copper colored shrub reaches its best potential if you wish to give a tropical look to your shrub border with this waxy leaved, exotically colored, yet easily grown curosity--and few, if any, of your plant friends will ever guess its identity.

60436 OROSTACHYS BOEHMERI [AGGREGATUS] CRA CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 "Guppy Mouth Stoneplant" Winter-dormant fish-mouth rosettes swell into tiny fleshy pale gray toned rose-bud rosettes in spring; many offsets forming a tiny delicate mat--will not survive competition from any vigorous Sedum neighbor, in our observation. White flowered Hokkaido native. Sometimes offered as O. furusei with tiny winter globes.

11500 OSMUNDA REGALIS OSM HT PRICE: $ 8.75 "Royal Fern" Given a moist location with protection from severe sunstroke, this will easily outlive any gardener: a long term project worth your patience as the elegant foliage arises in a more dramatic display every year.
