THE SILVER GARDEN COLLECTIONS

99197 COLLECTION: THE SILVER GARDEN When does pewter or platinum develop into a silver shimmer; when does neutral gray (like those little grey cells) morph into a silver; is stainless steel blue a silver? Why worry? All these pelted or nacre glazed glossy (shiny?) aluminum, the felted or pearl flecked, or white and gray powdered foliages will add elegance and chill drama to any garden, container, or conservatory design. We will select five plants to help you acheive high drama and sophisticated contrast--but we need to know where (conditions) and how (your aim) you will use thse in order to send the best suited to your plans. So let us know if outdoor urns and baskets or windowbox spillers are nedded; if greenhouse containers or deck design fillers are appropriate; or, if perhaps a standard or tall plant for a thriller is in you plan. Will this be in full sun or shade, a windy patio, or enclosed greenhouse? let us know and we will send five labeld quicksilver glitter plants which are appropriate at PRICE: $22.00 . For an extensive rage of 375 photos of plants silver, taupe, pearl gray, and ice blue, please refer to Karen Platt's SILVER LINING book.

Large dramatic species with pink toned new foliage hardening into rich green arching fronds. Must have high humidity to perform well--loves a large Wardian Case as its home (this is far too large for a small or narrow terrarium); nonetheless, if given a cool bright windowsill and a pebble tray, it will also become an impressive specimen given time and humidity; always a star in any hobby greenhouse. Always a popular and much sought after dramatic rarer plant!

Platinum beauty with demure white blossoms: The "Himalayan Silver Begonia." Easily grown in the windowsill garden, small enough for a large terrarium. 56061 BEGONIA IMPERIALIS BEG HP TERR PRICE: $ 6.00 (rz) "Carpet Begonia." Johnson hybrid with pink blossoms over the rex like foliage. 80744 CENTAUREA GYMNOCARPA CAPRI COMP HH CGH HT PRICE: $ 6.50An upright shrub from Capri with deeply dissected snowflake "Dusty Miller" leaves completely covered by a rich felted tomentose silver--which filigreed leaves completely hide the wooly white woody stems (repeat three times, very quickly). If wintered over, expect cute clusters of early rosy violet, fluffy, rayed flowers. Perfect in containers and borders. Not a Senecio or Artemisia, although a mimic of both through and through. This starts out as a spindly silvery stalk and finishes as a full bodied dramatic knock-out in any garden or container design.

50009 CHAMAERANTHEMUM VENOSUM ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $8.00 "India Plant" is a low growing beautiful Brazilian native with leathery flat leaves with silver netting. Good succulent bonsai with compact rounded heads of pink star flowers whose glossy petals are more wide and blunt than those of most C. ovata cultivars. If the leaves develop any surface scars, this usually means that the ambient conditions are too humid.

60272 CRASSULA OVATA PALLIDA [HORT] CRA HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Silver Jade Tree" more sensitive to chill than the other cultivars. Not really silver, but leaves of a pallid rine-gray tone. Much prized by collectors.

Unique species needing saturated (but never burning) light to form the most silvery flour dusted surface; needs adequate moisture to reach its potentially impressive proportions--but a more horizontal than vertical habit.

60393 KALANCHOE HILDEBRANDTII CRA HP TGH PRICE: $5.25"Silver Teaspoons" perfect description of the platinum hair pelting the oval leaves with narrow petioles; these remarkable leaves are rigidly ranked on slim extremely erect stems. Madagascar native usually offered as K. orgyalis `Silver' (but orgyalis is a much larger statured, less symmetrically upright growing, more tannish toned plant) in the West Coast trade.

61009 KALANCHOE LAETIVIRENS BIG MOMMA CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 1.75 Also known at Kalanchoe HBG 73004, from Huntington Botanic Gardens originally. Upright stout short trunks support thick upturned pearly surfaced fleshy leaves (so wide as to be nearly round in outline), each heavily ringed by a margin of cute baby plantlets--every kid needs one. Perhaps the most architecturally pleasing of this category as the foliage is both very compact and very heavily laden with offspring.

Indeed, this startling yet modestly proportioned charmer is easier to grow on a sunny windowsill than in the more humid greenhouse.

60419 KALANCHOE THYRSIFLORA CRA CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.25 "Flap Jacks" or "Oyster Plant" common names reflect the considerable popularity of this South African species with flat oval diagonally-placed leaves with an arresting silvery effect from white mealy surfaces, & with a distinct red rim appearing when grown in high light.
