An Easy Group of Aquatic Plants for Summer Use

99020 AQUATICS IN A TUB: For those of us simply too tired to dig a hole outdoors and wait for rain. A selection of tropical aquatics (floaters & submerged pot types) making perfect dramatic companions for your patio tub or undrained ceramic container. 5 plants @ $18.00

54522 ALTERNANTHERA POLYGONOIDES PURPLE SELECTION AMARA CGH TGH $ 3.25 "Water Amaranth" Slim purple lvs on branching plant popular in aquatic gardens. Also known as A. sessilis, "Scarlet Hygrophila" Also offered as a. reineckii--as this suggests, a very popular water garden and bedding plant of uncertain origin; most dramatic as a hanging basket item, or (as is quite low statured) a cascading purple carpet in windowboxes or urns especially when the petite white cloverheads of blossoms start to appear.

40236 BAUMIA [ELEOCHARIS DULCIS VARIEGATA] [HYB] CYP CGH HH $ 8.75 "Banded Water Chestnut" Gold-striped deep green sedge lvs held striftly erect form a crowded colony of very decorative foliage for vertical accent in summer pool or [as foliage is evergreen] indoor winter garden. Although many new subtropical bog rushes have been introduced in recent years, this remains the most elegantly sophisticated easily grown (if given full sun) one of the category.

40178 CYPERUS ALTERNIFOLIUS GRACILIS CYP HP TGH $ 6.25 "Miniature Umbrella Plant" Much smaller, more slender stems and reduced topknot of rayed bright leaflets giving it the obvious name, "Sparkler Grass." Best choice for the small aquatic tub, the miniature hobby greenhouse pool, or windowsill subject (if you grow as a houseplant, be sure to keep in an undrained container and to keep your cats at bay in order to avoid upchucked sections of this appearing throughout your house.)

40179 CYPERUS ALTERNIFOLIUS VARIEGATUS CYP HP TGH $ 12.50 "Variegated Umbrella" Broad white bands on stalks & blades. Quite spectacular.

55521 ECHINODORUS CORDIFOLIUS MARBLE QUEEN ALI CGH $ 6.50 "Variegated Burhead" Aquatic tropical with richly golden marbled plantain-like foliage--likes wet feet, but best not to completely submerge. Takes a bit of a winter's rest if kept chill.

50033 HEMIGRAPHIS RED EQUATOR [SP] ACAN HP TGH $ 3.00 "Baby Waffle" Slightly puckered, purple grape-sized leaves on miniature creeping stems creating extensive lovely low mats. Very effective cascading from a windowbox or patio urn; a traditional low growing houseplant; more recently also used in aquatic tubs and ornamental bogs.

51072 HYMENOCALLIS CARIBEAE VARIEGATA AMARY TGH HP $ 12.00 "Caribbean Amaryllis" Evergreen foot-long waxy strap lvs w/ wide rich ivory margins; Very showy cultivar demanding much warmth and constant moisture--actually prefers to be completely aquatic to produce the elaborate scented blossoms

30631 PISTIA STRATIOTES ARAC HP TGH $ 2.50 "Water Lettuce" Glorious open rosettes of spongy pearly- lime lvs with tiny caladium-like fls nestled at their base. Great in a pool; or follow G. Elbert's suggestion and grow in moist wet sphagnum for a perfect plant under lights--just anchor a rosette in some sphagnum moss stuffed in a pot for ballast; then set the pot in a deep saucer of water. In time as the "Water Lettuce" repeatedly offsets, a nearly perfect sphere of deeply pleated spongy rosettes develops: visually marvelous.

57504 RUELLIA BRITTONIANA CHI CHI ACA HP TGH $ 3.75 Stiff slim lvs rank the dark erect stems topped with showy bright pink blossoms; does well as bog plant, thus the "Pink Kathy Water Ruellia"--or grow in your outdoor summer beds as a pink fld "Texas Petunia" and it will perform and perform and perform.

52991 RUELLIA BRITTONIANA KATHY FERGUSON ACAN CGH HH $ 4.25 A vigorous heavily-bloomed very dwar selection of the woody Mexican shrublet with tidy linear lvs & long showy lavender tubular fls maturing to a brilliant deep purple; Lynn Lowery's new selection is sometimes offered as 'Katie's Dwarf.' Does as well as an aquatic as it does as a regular container or bedding subject--various customers have noted that they have an antique or special undrained pot on their summertime deck which they do NOT want to risk drilling a drainage hole into; so: if you plant bog loving 'Kathy' in this undrained pot, she will thrive especially if a bit of water collects on top.

41716 WEDELIA TRILOBATA OUTENREATH GOLD COMP HP CGH $ 3.50 "Golden Water Zinnia" A remarkable selection of the very popular hanging basket & groundcover "vine" with striking golden-ocher splashes & slashes on every tri-lobed leaf: most impressive when combined with the yellow daisy fls. Also successful as a groundcover bog plant. This variegated sport was discovered and shared by Gary Outenreath. For reasons known only to them, Parks received this from us and now offers this as "Outerreath Gold"!

HARDY AQUATICS FOR THE POOL & BOG
An Easy Group of Aquatic Plants for Summer Use

99069 AQUATICS IN A TUB: For those of us simply too tired to dig a hole outdoors and wait for rain. Here is a selection of hardy aquatics (a waterlily & submerged pot types) making perfect dramatic companions for your patio tub or undrained ceramic container. Items that will come back each year in most northern climates; these should be placed in a submerged or in-ground pond. 5 plants @ $35.00

80017 ACORUS CALAMUS VARIEGATUS ARAC HH HP $ 8.25 "Variegated Sweet Flag" Brightly cream-striped fanned leaves occasionally have small green spathe & spadix. Decorative accent plant for boggy areas. Typically sent to you as a mossed division.

30550 ACORUS GRAMINEUS MASAMUNE ARAC HP HT $ 3.00 Bright white-striped lvs similar to A.g. variegatus--altho considered to be more compact and shorter as matures.

40249 EQUISETUM TRISERIALE EQU HP HH CGH $ 5.00 Low growing colonies of bright green erect 2" to 4" wiry wands; this is similar to E. variegatum, but the finer, less rigid stems which form lovely interlaced mats are a far brighter green fall color than E. variegatum. Lovely in pots or borders; a true visual gem (with ease of culture--full light and moist feet) for that micro primitive aura.

40247 EQUISETUM HYEMALE EQU HP HH $ 4.00 "Horsetail" Clumps of grooved green reed-like maroon-ringed stems bear conelike sporing structures at tips; high silica content makes them "Scouring Rushes" for pots. Their extreme vertical aspect makes them a decorative must for shallow pool/bog designs; while their primitive aspect makes them a favorite in very contemporary garden designs--especially as is quite evergreen, persisting all winter if not exposed to excessive windtunnel conditions.
