60793 TALINUM PANICULATUM [PATENS] VARIEGATUM POR HP TGH $ 3.25 "Fame Flower" or "Jewels of Opar" Slender erect stems bear obovate ivory-margined fleshy leaves; terminal mist-like sprays of pinkish-red flowers followed by berries. Caribbean native easy to add to any planting palette; avoid chills which will initiate a brief dormant cycle. Long a standby in the sunny windowsill and the hobby greenhouse; recently discovered by the "Tropics in the Garden" movement and now successfully thriving in summertime patio urns, windowboxes, and even directly planted in beds.

60607TALINUM PATENS KINGWOOD GOLD POR CGH HP $ 3.25 Marvelous "Golden Fame Flower" selection made at Kingwood Center with bright chartreuse-gold foliage creating a very striking contrast with the misty clusters of carmine mini flowers followed with tiny berry constelations. This is the one featured so dramatically in mass in the island display beds at Kingwood Center. Equally dramatic as a dependable spot of gold in your winter windowsill.

42348 TECOMARIA CAPENSIS BIG TGH $ 7.75 The South African "Cape Honeysuckle," a bushy scandent shrub with attrractive dark pinnate foliage and showy upfaced terminal clusters of brilliantly scarlet trumpet/funnel flowers which peak late summer; performs best outdoors in full sun.

11401 TECTARIA CICUTARIA [GEMMIFERA, HORT.] POL HP CGH $ 5.50 "Button Ball Fern" Upright rhizomes with gracefully arching tripinnate fronds (triangular in overall outline) with a series on rounded button-like bulbils along the top of the central midrib. Caribbean tolerant of indoor conditions. A fern no child can resist.

49429 TETRADENIA CORDATA POL HP CGH $ 6.00 Very succulent relative of the common Swedish Ivy and the Iboza. This upright woody plant with dramatic felted foliage is for the house plant collector as well as the succulent plant grower. Even pleases the grower of aromatic plant.

41084 TETRASTIGMA HARMANDII VIT HP TGH $ 5.75 "Ape Ivy" or "Javan Grape" Leathery glossy fingered lvs. Easy in difficult environments--popular as an indoor pot plant; excellent as an indoor hanging basket as the waxy foliage tolerates less than ideal levels of humidity and light.

41085 TETRASTIGMA VOINIERIANUM VIT HP TGH $ 17.50 "Chestnut Vine" or "Lizard Plant" Enormous fleshy digitate lvs emerge with a cinnamon toned tawny wool supported on fleshy reddish ropelike stems. Handsome Laotian grape vine for the brave of heart. This is large and quickly gets very much larger. An excellent way to start your collection of Laotian natives. The price reflects not so much the rarity of this handsome creature as the rather complicated procedure of packing it for shipping.

59253 TEUCRIUM FRUTICANS LAB HH CGH $ 5.25 Impressive "Tree Germander" Mediteranean speices forming shrubs of silvery-gray foliage beautiful with the blue winter flowers, not produced in the north unless protected. Foliage prized in mixed summer containers.

88870 THALIA DEALBATA RED STEM MAR HH CGH HT $ 6.75 Dramatic aquatic with leathery oval leaves held in fans over the red stems--all covered with white powder; stalks of soft violet blossoms soon followed by strikingly attractive clusters of purple black seeds. Native to S. Carolina on thru Texas--but don't freeze roots !

54421 THEOBROMA CACAO POL HP CGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Newly available again for 2008. "Cocoa Tree" This chocolate plant has been requested by many of our customers over the last couple years. It is now available! Attractive leathery leaves emerge pinkish bronze; after forms trunks, produces yellowish flowers followed by the ten-ribbed orange fruits (of course, in the best conditions) which are (after fermentation and roasting) the commercial source of chocolate/cocoa. This plant is beautifully foliaged and makes a great plant-room subject, even if you never see the cocoa pods.

41138 THORNCROFTIA SUCCULENTA LAB HP CGH $ 5.75 "Mint Oak" Tidy woody stems hold pelted oak-shaped leaves with delicate mint fragrance; purple flowers. Eventually develops a gnarled woody base beloved by bonsai fanciers.

54014 THUNBERGIA BATTISCOMBEI ACAN CGH TGH $ 5.50 Shrubby vining Kenyan species with beautiful glossy lvs and racemes of electric blue (with a hint of violet) trumpet blossoms with yellow throats; best kept in a warm greenhouse during the winter so can start its big display early on. We've grown many "Clockvine" species, and this remains the most impressive flower--and even more impressively, the flowers are produced readily compared to many of the more famous species. Take a look at the last two thumbnails of this plant, provided to us from Kathy Keller. These were all plants bought from us last year as starter plants. All were grown from a this small size for a Fall Garden Show. We thank Kathy for sharing these photos with us. The plant in the upper right hand corner got First Prize!

31313 THUNBERGIA COCCINEA ACAN TGH $ 8.00 A woody climber from the lower Himalays with 8 foot long deep green leaf pairs bearing long pendant terminal clusters of astounding scarlet tubular flowers from Winter on into Spring. Must be in moist, warm greenhouse atmosphere to form buds for bloom. A challenge to bloom, but hard to resist.

50074 THUNBERGIA ERECTA ALBIFLORA ACAN HP TGH $ 3.50 Lovely "Paperwhite Sky Flower" with ivory trumpet blossoms, which reveal a yellow throat, produced readily mid to late winter on twiggy shrublets used in bonsai. Very reliable houseplant and excellent hobby greenhouse performer. Probably the most permanent member of the species.

50598 THUNBERGIA ERECTA BLUE MOON [GRANADA PURPLE] ACAN TGH $ 8.00 Impressive "Violet King's Mantle" from the collection of John Criswick; clean foliage and large ruffled violet-purple flowers rather than the species blue. Needs to develop some girth before initiating its blooming cycles.

53146 THUNBERGIA ERECTA FAIRY MOON GES HP $ 8.50 Attractive shrub "Picottee King's Mantle" with lavender blue trumpet shaped blossoms edged in white and throated yellow. Height of blooming in midwinter for us. Foliage always beautifully maintained.

31311 THUNBERGIA FRAGRANS ACAN TGH $ 6.50 Attractive Indian vine with sculptural leaf pairs and quite showy large funnel shaped blossoms of pure angelic white--beautiful even though it usually insists on producing these flowers up in the greenhouse rafters. The "Angel Wings" vine becomes woody with time.

50075 THUNBERGIA GRANDIFLORA ACAN CGH HP $ 6.50 "Bengal Trumpet" or "Clock Vine" Large blue-violet flared bell-flowers easily produced on the modest twining vine if given full sun and reliable humidity levels.

31312 THUNBERGIA GRANDIFLORA ALBA ACAN TGH $ 7.50 The rarely offered "Bengal Clock Vine" selection with large white trumpet shaped blossoms in elegant clusters; Indian native "Sky Flower" a clambering shrub developing woody stem with age. This is available for shipment usually in late summer--seems easier to bloom than the species form.

51737 THUNBERGIA GRANDIFLORA VARIEGATA ACAN TGH $ 12.00 Remarkable "Banded Bengal Trupet" shared by David Biggar with showy broad creamy white borders on each dramatic leaf; same blue violet trumpet flowers as the species form of this most favorite of conservatory vines. We have considerably reduced the original price because this is far easier to grow than we anticipated--if you have limited space in your greenhouse why not grow this clone to achieve beautiful foliage for continued drama between bloom cycles..

66782 TIBOUCHINA ATHENS BLUE MEL TGH HP $ 10.00 An excellent form of the felt foliaged "Princess Tree" with amazing amounts of showy blue flowers--very easy to bloom in containers, thus very popular for patio & conservatory. A favorite subject for standards as is easily pruned and staked.

54528 TIBOUCHINA GRANDIFOLIA MEL TGH $ 18.00 Collected from the hillside of Roberto Burle Marx's nursery, the woody "Rio Pincess Tree" produces pairs of large dramatic deeply veined furred leaves & terminal clusters of rich purple blossoms with white centers fading to rose. Demands plenty of space, bright light, and air movement--but can survive more neglect than we thought possible. This is a large statured specimen. This has presence.

49449 TIBOUCHINA LEPIDOTA VARIEGATA MEL TGH HP $ 12 .50 This variegated Tibouchina is a great dwarf for the home and is short enough to bloom and grow in a grow-light garden. Grow is with your African Violets or other light gardening subjects. Blooms easily with terminal panicles of irridescent lavender flowers and tends to maintain a horizontal habit with silvery leaves and depressed veins all margined white. For the grower with small spaces.

52264 TILLANDSIA ARAUJEI BRO HP TGH $ 5.75 "Sao Paulo Air Plant" Rock dwelling sea-spray species with short curved silvery-scurfted leaves forming thick scandent strands; pink and white flowers. Mount; don't pot.

53341 TILLANDSIA CYANEA ANITA [HYB] BRO HP TGH $ 12.75 Highy colored branched version of the popular cyanea--attractive small tuffets of deeply arched deep green leathery slim leaves (like a very friendly hedgehog) from which emerge the dramatic wide violet pink "Pink Feather" comb of bracts along which emerge, over a period of time, the cute blue (cyane) blossoms. Unlike most species, this is semi-terrestial, easily grown in a pot of orchid bark, wonderful in topiary designs; often marketed growing out of an ornamental seashell.

53395 TILLANDSIA CYANEA MEDIO-PICTA BROM TGH $ 40.00 A new cultivar of the fabulous "Pink Quill." This variety has yellow to cream central ribbon stripes down the leaves. Quicly clusters to form a remarkable mound of variegated glory. Extremely rare, extremely choice. Yet easy to grow.

52170 TILLANDSIA IONANTHE BRO HP TGH $ 4.25 "Blushing Bride" Clustering silver-scaled & haired air plant blushing completely rouge when ready to open its blue blossoms; the basal offsets of this "Sky Plant" eventually form a sphere. Easy as long as you are not tempted to pot this terminally cute epiphyte; loves a good misting if not in the humidity of a greenhouse.

53269 TILLANDSIA JUNCEA BRO HP TGH $ 7.00 "Wiskbroom Air Plant" Many compact rushlike leaves held in a upright rosette; the coppery deep green leaves of this selection from Ann Harris reach 12"; the bracts of the inflorecenses are bright red, the petals bluish purple.

53270 TILLANDSIA MAGNUSIANA BRO TGH $ 7.75 Dainty small species with many threadlike leaves, each covered with glittery silver scales, forming a dense feathery rosette from which peep violet flower petals. Mount on wood and mist regularly. We send divisions in dry moss--but do not advise you keep this in the moss. Do not pot this one!.

52172 TILLANDSIA USNEOIDES BRO HP TGH HH $ 1.75 "Spanish Moss" Silvery-gray threaded masses of tiny plantlets in dramatic garland famous in subtropical and tropical America for their eventual effect on draped trees; yet the perfect houseplant for compulsive mister-ers. Not collected--this is a bright silvery clone from Guatamala (and thus not needing the chill winter of any collected in the southern USA where most clones are a shade dingy gray in color anyway) which has been growing happily in our Ohio greenhouses for the last 20 years. We notice that our customers are beginning to use this lavishly in their terrarium designs where it thrives.

40938 TOLMIEA MENZIESII VARIEGATA SAX HP CGH HH $ 4.25 "Variegated Piggy Back Plant" Fresh green, hairy, lobed leaves with richly yellow-flecked surfaces grow plantlets on the tops of the leaf base. Likes a cool spot with good humidity. Renamed 'Taff's Gold' in England.

40945 TRACHELOSPERMUM A~ SHIROFU-CHIRIMEN APO CGH HP $ 8.75 Miniature selection of the Asian "Japanese Jasmine" sports pairs of tiny oval semi-glossed leathery leaves with pinkish-cream variegation; lovely clumping, shrubby tiny vine. This is extremely extremely slow growing and thus popular for mame. Translates as "White Variegated Crepe Paper"--a long ago distribution from Longwood 770-104 (we suspect B. Yinger originally scooped this up for Longwood).

40939 TRACHELOSPERMUM ASIATICUM OGON NISHIKI APO HP CGH HH $ 12.00 "Gold Heart Korean Jasmine" Shrubby vines with creamy gold centered leathery leaves with red tinted edges and scented ivory flower clusters fading to sulphur yellow in late winter. Originally Rhynchospermum divaricatum. (This information will NOT be on any plant quiz.)

42032TRACHELOSPERMUM ASIATICUM TEXAS APO CGH HH HP $ 5.25 Very dark slim leaves with bright lime veins punctuate long internodes--creates a glossy thick carpet with considerable patience; bubblegum scented flowers. Cultivar name of this "Confederate Jasmine" suggests that can survive outdoor winters in most of the Gulf Coast region--but we've received decidedly mixed reports on this. Leaves purplish with chill.

Splendid Spiderwort Offerings for the 2008 SEASON

TheSpiderwort group includes a lot of our favorite plants--even though most of their common names are remarkably politically incorrect. From the common vining "Wandering Jew" to the always popular "Moses in the Bullrushes," these plants are very much in demand. Please note that we list the Moses in the Bullrush both under Tradescantia (its new classification) and under Rhoeo (its old name). You will find it in both sections of our online catalogue.

90232 SPLENDID SPIDERWORT COLLECTION: Tell us how you intend to use your tropical Commelinaceae and we will send appropriate showy plants from such genera as Callisia, Cochiostemma, Cyanotis, Dichorisandra, Geogenanthus, Murdannia, Rhoeo, Setcreasea, Tradescantia, Tripogandra, & Zebrina. 5 plants @ $12.00

50537 TRADESCANTIA ALBIFLORA ALBO-VITTATA COM HP $ 3.75 "Giant White Inch Plant" Beautiful white-striped leaves closely packed on succulent stems which form new stalks from a common rootstalk, unlike most of this genus.

50523 TRADESCANTIA BERMUDENSIS [SPATHACEA NANA] COMM HP $ 3.50 Tight multi-headed mounds of stiff short fleshy leaves blushed pinkish purple beneath, in tight whorls obscuring the stout stems.

50524 TRADESCANTIA (RHOEO) BERMUDENSIS VARIEGATA (PINK) COMM HP TGH $ 6.25Hort: R. spathacea nana variegata. Bright pink and grapestained cream stripes on the short somewhat succulent leaves, hued pinkish purple beneath, which are tightly packed on short stout stems, quickly offsetting to form a colorful hemisphere. Easy short mounded houseplant as long as never exposed to chill. Now all Rhoeo are considered Tradescantia

50572 TRADESCANTIA (RHOEO) BERMUDENSIS VARIEGATA (GOLD) COMM TGH HD $ 7.50 Very tidy multiheaded mounds of fleshy thickly overlapping foliage--each short thick leaf is irregularly striped a beautfiul golden ochre to pastel yellow, lovely with the purple blushed underleaf; NOT the pinkish cream striped cultivar.

58306 TRADESCANTIA (RHOEO) BERMUDENSIS BERMUDENSIS SITAKE'S GOLD COMM TGH HD $ 12.00 Very tidy multiheaded mounds of fleshy thickly overlapping blond hued foliage--each with its distinct stripes of amethyst and champagned green--accented beautifully by the violet blushed underleaf.. Yet another entry into the "Moses in the Bullrushes" tribe. The habit is larger than and lower profiled than the typical bermudensis cultivars.

50570 TRADESCANTIA SPATHACEAE [DISCOLOR] COMM TGH HP $ 8.25 The large statured traditional "Moses in a Boat" or "Oyster Plant" so called for the open oyster shell shaped bracts from which peep the white spiderflowers--boat shaped bracts tucked between the thickly packed outthrust fleshy green leaves, purpled beneath. Now more correctly named Tradescantia spathaceae, but seldom so identified in any plant book or magazine article. This is the one grandma grew.

61723 TRADESCANTIA BLUSHING MAID (BRIDE) COM HP $ 3.00 Also called "Blushing Bride." Great new introduction of white variegated central petiole and leaf which started pink and fades to white. Great hanging basket and great new variegated plant with best coloring during the cooler periods of the seasons; most likely will prove to be winter hardy in the deep south. Produces green foliage during warm months, variegated foliage during the months with cool nights.

50542 TRADESCANTIA FLUMINENSIS AUREA COMM HP $ 3.75 "Golden Inch Plant" Cascades of bright chartreuse leaves on cascading stems displayed to advantage as a golden addition to windowboxes and hanging baskets. Forms marvelous groundcover--try in as a low surface of glossy lemon ochre under your bed of Impatiens or purple leaved Dahlias to shake up the visuals a bit.

50543 TRADESCANTIA FLUMINENSIS LAEKENENSIS RAINBOW ARAC HP TGH $ 4.50 "Rainbow Inch Plant" Small leaves lavishly variegated white & fuchsia with pinkish-blue overtones; remove reversions immediately. Needs good light saturation to maintain this level of rich variegation; perfect in windowboxes, small baskets. Sometimes confused in the trade with the much more petite Callisia repens variegata.

50546 TRADESCANTIA FLUMINENSIS VARIEGATA COMM HP TGH CGH $ 3.75 "Speedy Henry" Glossy green & white striped foliage; excellent subject for hanging baskets, for groundcover; try outdoors as a easy quick summertime groundcover. Even though this should be simply dead common, amazing numbers of orders arrive for this every year. Cheap, easy, flashy: these sterling values never fail.

50538 TRADESCANTIA PURPLE PLUSH [HORT] COMM HP $ 3.75 Unidentified species with wide felted foliage down-cupped of pink-purple. Seasonally will spring forth with a misty froth of tiny mauve blossoms.

50548 TRADESCANTIA SILLAMONTANA COMM HP CGH $ 4.00 "White Velvet" or Gossamer Plant" Lvs heavily pelted with white silky gossamer wool; showy magenta-lavender flowers; best if severly pruned seasonally. Mexican native still offered and listed in Europe as Tradescantia / Cyanotis velutina.
We put the Tree Fern Group together here for convenience. You can also find them under their correct scientific names

11438 ALSOPHILA COOPERII [CYATHEA AUSTRALIS] CYT CGH PRICE: $10.00 "Australian Tree Fern" Young plants present a spreading canopy of metallic deep green arching fronds supported by a cinnamon trunk; eventually a massive stunning specimen. Although we recommend greenhouse culture in our climate, some customers have successfully grown this as a house or large Wardian Case specimen, always keeping constant levels of humidity. We have grown this to a most impressive size on a sunny porch, glass enclosed during the winter.

10089 BLECHNUM GIBBUM POLYP PRICE: $ 5.75 Available again in 2009 Late Spring. Lovely erect trunked "Dwarf New Caledonian Tree Fern" holds terminal whorls of deeply cut leathery thin arched fronds; Needs constant moisture--regular levels of humidity--thrive in a Wardian case or your hobby greenhouse. We include a picture here of Blechnum moorei cristata. Perhaps this might be available in a year or so.

11634 BLECHNUM SILVER LADY (AFFINITY MOOREI) POLYPOD TGH CGH PRICE: $ 9.50 Charming "Dwarf Silver Tree Fern" with pewter gray toned arching fronds in a wide rosette atop the very gradually developing woody trunk. Needs good reliable humidity levels.

11620 DICKSONIA ANTARTICA DIC CGH $10.00 The majestic "Tasmanian Treefern" needs cool (subtropic) very humid conditions to form its canopy of impressive outreaching deep green heavily textured fronds, with their network of straw toned veins, crowning the fibrous, wooly trunk. Avoid excessive heat during the winter.

40948 TRIPLOCHLAMYS [PAVONIA] MULTIFLORA MAL CGH $ 18.00 Unusual Hibiscus cousin: attractive dark lance leaves along woody upright stems with remarkable blossoms: impressive whorled brilliantly red incurved bracts overwhelm the solt reddish purple petals and blue anthers.

50532 TRIPOGANDRA FALSE BROMELIAD [HORT] COMM HP TGH $ 4.25 "Streaked False Bromeliad" Introduced initially as a Callisia but more likely to be Hadrodemas warscewicsiana striata (which sounds rather terminal). Large upright whorled cups of tightly overlapping white-streaked fleshy leaves. A very popular, handsome plant even if of uncertain nomenclature. Showy--your friends will not believe this is a Spiderwort until the branched inflorescence appears with the cute three petaled flowers.

50529 TRIPOGANDRA PURPLE SCIMITARS [SP] COMM HP CGH $ 2.50 Unidentified species originally offered as a Setcreasea. Small elongated curved stiff waxy purple leaves rigidly spaced on deep purple erect (and then toppling) fat stems; blue to violet flowers. Excellent used as an outdoor bedding foliage plant; dramatic cascading from your patio urns. Much brighter shine and deeper aubergine purple than the smaller statured (Setcreasea) "Purple Plush/ Purple Heart Plant." Sometimes this is ordered in considerable numbers for mass plantings--we need considerable warning time to accomodate large orders.

TROPICAL VINES COLLECTION for the 2008 SEASON

99017 TROPICAL VINES COLLECTION (FIVE PLANTS) The range of possibilities is daunting; so please indicate whether you need types willing to curtain your indoor windows, spill over a basket, climb to the top of your greenhouse with showy blossoms, or quickly cover your patio trellis. $18.00.

51270 TULBAGHIA SIMMLERI AMARYL CGH $ 4.25 South African "Mauve Onion" with evergreen succulent strap foliage; sweetly scented mauve colored flower heads. Good pot herb with fashionably edible flowers; seems to flower more readily if crowded in a 10"clay pot. We notice that this is now featured as an aquatic subject of late. Typically sent as divisions.

41478 TULBAGHIA VIOLACEA SILVER LACE AMARY CGH HP $ 5.25 "Variegated Society Garlic" Clumping evergreen narrow fleshy lvs edged pearly white; lavender flowers on one foot stems. Try the leaves in a sandwich! Ever so sophisticated addition to any tub of tropical herbs, giving a dramatic vertical accent. Now you can have your variegate and eat it too.

31720 TYPHONIUM FILIFORMIS [HORT] ARAC CGH $ 18.00 Small statured mound of arrowshaped (cordate) grass green leaves on long oddly channeled stalks emerging from a tuber; the "Perak Herb" with yellow spathes dotted blood red. Dale Wagner's Philippine clone used for various mysterious (to us) medical herbal combinations. For us this remains more a botanical curosity than a horticultural gem. There: that was harsh.

30684 TYPHONIUM VENOSUM [GUTTATUM] ARAC TGH $ 4.25 "Voo Doo Bulb" Sauromatum venosum's correct name: in late winter the elongated dark brown spadix emerges from the fat bulb, opening to reveal its maroon spoted interior and the slim blackish spadix whose fetid fragrance is beloved of flies. After a few days this bloom collapses--you will have probably collapsed somewhat earlier. If not already planted, plant the bulb because it will soon be ready to send up the snakeskin mottled thick stalk topped by a curved horn-like segmented leaf. The timing will be different if planted outdoors--a possible trick even in our Zone 6b gardens if the tubers are situated well below the frost line in a perfectly drained location (even if the main tuber rots during a severe extended winter, numerous bulbiles usually survive to sprout the following summer)..
